Earl Sidney Hunter was born May 4, 1921, in Lola, Kansas. He graduated from Lola High School in 1939 and attended Kansas State University where he played football. In the spring of 1943, he was called into service and became a Lieutenant in the Air Force.
He married Marilyn Kirk in April 1944. He was discharged from the service in December 1945 and returned to Kansas State. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1947 and began working for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He moved to Phillips, Texas, in 1953 and worked at the Phillips Refinery until he retired in 1984. He moved to Borger in 1973 and to Lockhart, Texas, in 2010.
While living in Phillips, he was active in Boy Scouts and Little League baseball in which his sons participated. He was also a Mason, belonged to Phillips Lionâ€™s Club, Borger Toastmasters, served several terms as warden of St. Peterâ€™s Episcopal Church, and was a lay reader. In addition, he was on the boards of the Phillips 66 Credit Union and Phillips Golf Course, and he served as the Republican precinct chairman in Phillips and in Borger.
In 1969, he and his family began building a cabin in Red River, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn in August 2011. He is survived by his sons Kirk of San Antonio, Craig of Lockhart, and Monte of Odessa and Austin. He has seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren with three more on the way.
A private memorial service was held Friday, November 11, 2011, at 3:00 p.m., at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Lockhart, Texas. The family has requested memorials in honor of Earl be made to St. Peterâ€™s Episcopal Endowment Memorial Fund, Borger, Texas, or Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Lockhart, Texas.
