On Friday night, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles played tough and moved the ball up and down Eagle Field to beat the Floydada Whirlwinds 47-19.
The first quarter showed some great running by All-Star Colton Valle and QB Chris Bryan. The clock had 8:24 when Valle ran to put the first points on the board. The Whirlwinds answered back with a great pass to Jordon Woody, but the Eagle defense, led by Brady Robbins, Daniel Segedy, Caleb Manzella, Terry Bryan and Tate Murray stopped them quick. Eagles took back the offense and looked to continue runs with Valle, but an interception halted the Eagle drive.
The second quarter started with a Valle run, a Murray grab, then Valle rushing for a 30-yard touchdown. Terry Bryan trick play for extra points turned into two. Eagles were now looking to blank Floydada 15-0.
Just that quick, Floydada’s senior RB Rex Mathis rushed and moved the pylons which eventually got him a touchdown. Eagles returned the favor with a beautiful sideline throw catch from C Bryan to Christian Ward for 55 yd TD. Eagles 21-7. A couple of penalties and a punt gave Floydada the momentum to score two more touchdowns by their QB Jose Martinez. The PAT failed, leaving a close race right before halftime. C Bryan sailed a 45 yd pass to Tate Murray with 1:29 left to put Eagles ahead 28-19. A run-down save from scoring by T Bryan kept Floydada from scoring again.
Third quarter was all about running the ball and using up some clock. A pitch from C Bryan to Valle, who threw 35 yds to T Bryan to keep the fans on their feet. Big defense plays by Robbins and Segedy gave T Murray another TD setup by rushing 30 yds. Valle had an impressive 215 rushing and 50 yds catching to an impressive night. C Bryan ran 65 yards, including the final TD of the game. He finished with 165 yds passing and his team won 47-19. Eagles sit 2-0 in district play and travel next week to take on Highland Park.
