On Tuesday afternoon, the Dumas Demons scored 18 runs in the final three innings to get a 21-6 win over the Borger Bulldogs in the 2012 season opener at Huber Park.
The mixture of six errors and nine walks, to go along with 16 Demon hits, proved to be a costly combination for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs got off to a solid start in the first inning, with senior pitcher Garth Payton striking out all three batters in the top of the inning. Ben Sharp gave Borger a 1-0 on fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, the Demons quickly put two men on base off of singles. Two Bulldog errors helped bring both Demon base runners home to give Dumas a 1-2 lead.
The Demons added another run on a double steal. But the Bulldog were able to respond in the bottom of the second inning, with Colton Hunter bringing in a run to make it a 2-3 score.
The score stayed 2-3 until the top of the fourth inning, where the Demons scored eight runs.
A walk and two errors by the Bulldogs quickly brought in two Demon runs to make it a 2-5 score.
The Bulldogs finally got an out on a strikeout. But the Demons would hit a triple and two doubles to cap off their big inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs were able to respond by scoring four runs on hits by Hunter, Sharp, Clay Ellis, and Max Lusk to make it a 6-11 game.
Unfortunately, the final two innings belonged to the Demons with the 10-run rule enforced after the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs will now look to put the loss to Dumas behind them as they will next take part in the Cavalier Classic Tournament this weekend in Amarillo and Pampa.
