Drowning reported at Lake Meredith

A drowning occurred at Lake Meredith on Wednesday evening.
Lake Meredith Park Rangers are reporting that Charles Johnston, 21, of Fritch, drowned on July 4 while trying to swim across Sanford-Yake Cove.
Around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Borger Police Department received 911 calls regarding a swimmer having problems while trying to swim across Sanford-Yake Cove.
Witnesses said that Johnston started to swim across the cove to meet his brother and friends that were camping in South Canyon.
Texas Parks and Wildlife officers began a boat search within minutes of the initial 911 call. National Park Service Rangers arrived on scene within minutes.
Assistance was provided by the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Department, Fritch EMS and Fritch Fire Department for the Wednesday night search.
An effort to locate the body was suspended after midnight Wednesday.
The search and recovery efforts were resumed Thursday morning and successful just before 1:00 p.m. July 5.
The body was located and recovered by Amarillo Police Department divers with the on-scene assistance of the Clarendon Fire Department Dive Team, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and National Park Service boats.
