No disrespect to the rest of the nation, but the best high school football in the country is found in the great state of Texas.
On Friday night the Vista Ridge Wolves from Colorado Springs, Colo., came into their contest against the Borger Bulldogs with a lot of hype due to an undefeated 6-0 record and a number one ranking in 3A in the state of Colorado.
But from the opening kickoff to the final quarterback kneel down, the Bulldogs proved the top ranking in Colorado just is not that impressive in Texas, as the Bulldogs came away with the dominating homecoming win 32-20 at Bulldog Stadium.
The Bulldogs came out playing a physical style of football which the Wolves was not able to handle.
On the opening kickoff, Bulldog senior Dustin Clark took the ball 35 yards setting up the Borger offense inside Wolves’ territory.
On the third play of the drive, junior quarterback Jacob Rendon connected with senior Tyler Ortega for a 23 yard pass, placing the Bulldogs just inside the Wolves’ 20 yard line.
Four plays later, Clark took the snap and ran nine yards into the end zone to give Borger an early 6-0 lead.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs constantly applied great pressure on the Wolves’ quarterback Thomas Newman and shut down their running game most of the night.
The Wolves racked up 202 yards of offense on the night. However, over 100 yards of that came from two big plays.
In the middle of the first quarter, the Wolves caught a break when an interception gave them the ball on the Bulldogs’ 33 yard line. Following the interception, Newman broke free for a 33 yard touchdown run to tie the score at 6-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, Bulldog senior Austin Young broke free down the right side line for what appeared to be a 78 yard touchdown kickoff return. But a penalty took the touchdown off the scoreboard but the Bulldogs had the ball on the Wolves’ 12 yard line.
A seven yard run by Clark set the Bulldogs up on the one yard line. Rendon would then follow the push by the offensive line for a one yard touchdown run to make it a 12-6 score.
Just before the first quarter ended, a bad punt by the Wolves gave Borger the ball on the Wolves’ 27 yard line. On the second play of the second quarter, Clark scored his second touchdown of the night on a 26 yard run to make the score 19-6.
Just before halftime, the Bulldogs put together a quick six play touchdown drive to make it a 26-6 score.
Rendon connected with sophomore Austin Henry for two passes for 30 yards to get to the Wolves’ 11 yard line. The drive ended with Clark finding the end zone for the third time in the half to give Borger all the momentum at the halftime break.
The score would stay the same until the beginning of the fourth quarter when Pierre Copeland came up with a 17 yard touchdown interception to pull the Wolves back to within two touchdowns 26-13.
After a Bulldog punt, the Wolves got the ball back and were ready to try to cut their deficit to one touchdown. However, Henry came up with an interception in the middle of the field and ran for a 25 yard return to put the Bulldogs on the Wolves’ 13 yard line.
On the next play, Clark scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 13 yard run to make it a 32-13 game.
The Wolves added a late touchdown on a 71 yard run, but it would not be enough as Borger came away with the big win over Colorado’s top ranked team.
The Bulldogs improve to 3-4 for the season and will finally start District 1-3A play next week traveling to take on their longtime rivals Pampa.
