Good pitching by Chayse Tracy, timely hitting, and great defense led the Borger Bulldogs to a 5-2 win over the Pampa Harvesters in the District 1-3A finale for both teams.
Entering the game, the Bulldogs and Harvesters knew Friday night would not be the last time the teams would get to take the field for the 2012 season. But a lot was at stake in Pampa, as the winner of the would claim the district’s number two seed and win the season series between the longtime rivals.
The start of the game proved to be a solid pitcher’s battle as both teams would come up with just one hit each through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, Borger senior Max Lusk got on base off a single to center field.
Two batters later Clay Ellis put the ball in play, which led to a Pampa throwing error. The error led to giving Lusk the opportunity to race around the bases and slide into home plate for the first run of the game.
The Lusk and Ellis combination struck again in the top of the sixth inning, as Lusk hit his third single of the game before being brought in on a RBI double by Ellis to make it a 2-0 score.
Through the first six innings, the Harvesters only reached past second base one time, due to good defense and the pitching effort by Tracy.
In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs were able to add three insurance runs off a RBI single by Grant Boren and a two RBI single by Colten Hunter.
Despite keeping Pampa scoreless through six innings, those three insurance runs in the seventh inning proved to come in handy, as Pampa tried to put together a late rally by scoring two runs off a solo home run and a RBI single.
Tracy pitched all seven innings giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out six batters.
The win by the Bulldogs allowed them to finish district play with a 6-3 record, while Pampa finished with a 5-4 mark.
The Bulldogs will open the 3A playoffs by taking on the Levelland Lobos in the Bi-District playoff round. The site and times of the game were to be determined as of press time Saturday morning.
