Didn’t clinch yet. Perryton tops Borger 12-11

April 25, 2011

For sports fans that enjoy a little bit of drama, your wish looks like it is going to be granted in the District 1-3A baseball race for the title.
Going into Saturday’s contest, the Borger Bulldogs needed to win just one of their final two district games to clinch the District 1-3A title outright and earn a first round bye in the playoffs.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs had to make the trip up to Perryton, where the Rangers know how to use the home field advantage as good as any team in the Texas Panhandle.
The two teams slugged it out back and forth throughout the afternoon, but the Rangers were able to hang on in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Bulldogs 12-11 and pull within one game of first place in the district standings.
Perryton jumped out on the Bulldogs early by scoring six runs in the first two innings. But the Bulldogs responded in the third and fourth innings by scoring six to take a 7-6 lead.
The Rangers quickly responded back to build a 12-8 lead going into the seventh inning before Borger tried to rally as Max Lusk connected for a three run homerun to make it a 12-11 game. Unfortunately, the comeback came up just short sending Borger to 15-11-1 overall and 6-2 in district play.
Now the final day of regular season play on Saturday will be interesting as Pampa and Perryton sit one game behind Borger.
This leads to the potential for a three-way-tie for the district crown if the Harvesters defeat the Bulldogs and Perryton beats Dalhart.
A three-way-tie would lead to a two-game playoff between the three teams to determine the seeding for the three district playoff spots.
So far this school year, the district has potentially faced a similar scenario in girls’ basketball and softball, only to have the end of the regular season play out with no ties.
Hopefully, Borger can continue that district trend by taking care of business on Saturday and getting the win over Pampa.
The good news is the Bulldogs have defeated the Harvesters three times already this season. However, most sports fans understand it is difficult to play the same team that many times before you finally drop one.
So while the Bulldogs should be confident going into this Saturday’s game, the team will understand that defeating Pampa will not be an easy task.
The Pampa vs. Borger district finale will begin at noon on Saturday at Huber Park.
Borger 102 410 3 -11 15 3
Perryton 240 132 x -12 10 2
