Crews respond to fire near Skellytown

June 16, 2011

Local fire crews responded to a grass fire near Skellytown Wednesday afternoon.
Crews began fighting the fire around noon. The fire was about six miles east from Carson County on Highway 152, approaching the Hutchinson County lines.
It caused the closure of the highway, sending traffic through Panhandle. The call was reported at 11:10 a.m. and was put out at 2 p.m.
Skellytown and Panhandle Fire Departments first responded to the scene and eventually asked for mutual aid, bringing in Hoover, White Deer, Borger, Stinnett, and Hutchinson County.
Hutchinson County Fire Marshal Danny Richards said it appeared the fire consumed about 500 acres of land.
There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
