The West Texas Comanches opened up District play Saturday in Stinnett, with a convincing win over the Follett Panthers 22-6 in a 4 1/2 inning “mercy rule” game. Senior Carlos Juarez looked good from the mound for the Tribe as he pitched all 5 innings. Juarez struck out eleven batters, while walking just two, and allowing three earned runs. The bottom of the third was the Panther killer when WT almost batted around twice and put up twelve runs. Cade Guinn had a stellar day at the plate with a single, two doubles, and four RBI’s.
Two of the Panthers earned runs came in the first inning. Juarez walked the lead off hitter for Follett and struck out the next. However, the third hitter banged a triple and brought in a run. A sacrifice fly allowed Follett to tag up and score, but the scoring would end with two. The Comanches put three out of their first four hitters on base with base on balls. Guinn belted his first RBI double to left center, and two batters later, Lane Shelton hit an RBI base hit to bring him home. WT led 4-2 after one.
Follett went three up and three down in the top of the second courtesy of three strike outs by Juarez. The Tribe scored four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Hoff hit a double, big Ty Lay followed him on base when he was hit by a pitch. Chase Elliott got on with a walk. Then Guinn and Alex Ramirez hit back to back RBI base hits to score the three. Guinn scored on a sacrifice hit by Shelton. After two, the Comanches led 8-2.
Juarez struck out the third hitter up, and the West Texas infield took care of the other two outs. The bottom of the third was huge for the Tribe as they sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs. Guinn and Ramirez had back to back doubles to clear the bags. Several runs later, the Comanches had put up a 20-2 lead after three innings.
Errors by the Comanches allowed the Panthers to score three of their four runs in the top of the fourth. That made the score 20-6 with WT still coming up to bat. Two hit batters put two runners on and Lay belted out a triple to the left field fence and cleared the bases. West Texas led 22-6 after four, and needed to hold Follett to five runs or less to end the game early with a ten run lead.
The Panthers got their first two hitters on base and across home to score but that was all for Follett. Juarez fanned three to end the game with the win for WT.
Guinn hit two doubles and had four RBI’s. Lay had a double with an RBI. Ramirez hit a double with two RBI’s. Hoff had a double and Lay had a triple with and RBI. Shelton had two RBI’s.
The Comanches are 1-0 in District and 5-7 overall. Their next game is Monday in Stinnett against Boys Ranch.
