The West Texas Comanches took their hoop action to the Miami Tournament this past weekend. The Tribe faced five different teams and got five wins to bring home the Championship Trophy. The Comanches improve to 9-1 on the year.
The Comanches faced the Kress Kangaroos in their opening game. It was a barn burner. They were down by four points with less than a minute to play and Chase Elliott hit a huge three and Carlos Juarez sank two free throws to squeak out a win, 70-67. Alex Ramirez led in scoring with 21 points.
In game number two, the Comanches had little trouble putting away Hedley 54-30. Ty Lay led the team in scoring with 12 points. In their third game, their opponent was the host team Miami. West Texas put away the Warriors 52-38. Ramirez led in scoring with 21 points in that game.
The Pampa Harvesters JV was their next team to face. This was a good game. The Harvesters ran a box 1 on Ramirez to try and contain him, but that didn’t work well for Pampa. The Tribe got the win and Ramirez led in scoring with 18. Nathan Forrest was close behind with 13 points.
The Championship game was against the Shamrock Irish. This game was a tale of two halves. The Irish jumped out to an 11-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brice Martin and Clay Berry seemed to be what the doctor ordered against the Irish, because these two provided a huge spark to the Comanche press and played a major role in the outcome of the game.
The Comanches run a full court press that can be smothering at times. After trailing by nine after the first, the Tribe never looked back. They never trailed again, and their defense held the Irish to a scoreless fourth quarter and won the thing 53-31.
