West Texas High’s Comanches opened up district baseball with a disappointing 7-5 loss to Follett Saturday. The Comanches made four costly errors, but made a great comeback attempt in the bottom of the final inning. They had the runners on base, but just couldn’t get them across home plate.
Logan Hoff pitched four innings and gave up five earned runs. Carlos Juarez threw three innings and gave up zero runs and allowed just one hit.
Ty Lay was 2-4 at the plate with a walk and a double. Kyle Stroud was 4-4 with two talks and two base hits. Juarez was walked three times and got on with a fielder’s choice.
In Monday’s game against Boys Ranch, it was a wild one. The Comanches trailed most of the game but won it 21-9 in a “mercy rule” game. The Tribe trailed 6-2 in the second inning and 9-3 going into the final inning.
The Comanches scored 21 runs on eight hits and three errors.
Boys Ranch walked 14 batters in the fourth. The Rough Riders scored nine runs on nine hits and three WT errors.
Carlos Juarez pitched three and one third innings and gave up eight runs, just three of them earned, off nine hits. He walked three. Alex Ramirez threw one and two thirds innings and gave up one earned run on zero hits. He walked four batters.
Kyle Stroud belted a triple.
The story of the game was going into the bottom of the fourth inning and trailing. West Texas sent 24 batters to the plate. They got five hits and walked fourteen times. Boys Ranch made three errors in that inning alone, as the Tribe put up 18 runs to take the lead for good and win the game.
The win and weekend loss give the Comanches a 1-1 District record. Their next game is Friday, April 1 in Shamrock.
