Comanches knock off Stratford, gain second consecutive playoff berth
It was simple last night for West Texas High. Win the ball game and earn the third place playoff sport in what is probably the toughest 1A District in the state, or lose and start basketball season. The Stratford Elks have been to the state playoffs since 1998, including some recent runner up finishes and a couple of State Titles. If memory serves me, the last time the Tribe has won against the Elks, was 2001. The Comanches handled their business 16-7. So, “How about them Comanches?” After Stratford scored a touchdown almost effortlessly on the opening drive of the game, the Comanche defense was unforgiving. The front four of big Ty Lay, awesome Austin Ivy, dangerous Dylan Ewing, and shady Cheyne Keasler could have been arrested for attempt to do bodily harm. These guys were relentless, time after time, they stopped the Elk offense on 3rd down, and their quarterback was punished over and over with sacks. Keasler was also responsible for keeping an All-State Casey Lantelme at bay and he did a great job. If anyone expected an offensive shootout, they were wrong. This game was fought and won in the trenches, the old fashioned way, with big time defense. The Comanches end their regular season with a record of 7-3 and 2-2 in the toughest little 1A District in Texas. They will face Quanah in the Bi-District round next weekend.
