West Texas High was sitting in third place alone in the District standings Friday, but after a 17-12 loss to the Irish in Stinnett yesterday, things are looking messy. It was a one point game until the top of the sixth, when things went bad for WT. They were trailing 8-7 when Alex Ramirez walked 2, hit 2, and the Irish also banged out four hits to take a 16-7 lead the Comanches couldn’t overcome.
Jess Shields took the loss on the mound. He pitched 5 innings and had 3 strike outs, walked 3, and allowed 4 earned runs. Ramirez threw the 6th inning with no strike outs, walked 2, hit 2, and allowed 4 hits. Carlos Juarez closed the game in the 7th inning and struck out 3 batters, and one unearned run came in on a WT over throw.
The Comanches led 2-0 after the first inning. Tyler Hoff got on base with a single and big Ty Lay’s double over second base allowed Hoff to score with some nifty base running. Cade Guinn also hit an RBI double. The second inning went scoreless and the Tribe still had a 2-0 lead going into the third inning.
Three West Texas errors helped the Irish scored seven runs, four unearned, to take a 7-2 lead. The Comanches answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs from a Lay solo home run and another Guinn double. They trailed 7-4 after three. Both teams went three up, three down in the fourth.
Shamrock scored one more in the top of the fifth. WT added three to their total in the bottom. Lay got on base with a single and Chase Elliott brought him around with an RBI double. Guinn followed him on base after an Irish error. Lane Shelton hit a sacrifice RBI. The Tribe trailed 8-7 after five.
Then the meltdown in the sixth happened with eight Irish batters coming across the plate and they took a 16-7 lead. The Comanches loaded the bags with a Bailey Kerr and Ramirez walk, and a Juarez base hit. Lay belted a 2 RBI double. Elliott hit an RBI single to left and Guinn had an RBI base hit to center. When the inning was done, WT had pulled within five 16-12.
The Irish added one more run in the top of the 7th to lead 17-12. The Comanches unfortunately, went three up and three down to end the ball game.
Lay just needed a triple to hit for the cycle, as he had a single, double, and home run. He had 4 RBI’s. Elliott had a single, 2 doubles, and 3 RBI’s. Guinn had a base hit, a double, and and RBI.
