West Texas High’s boys opened District play with a sloppy loss in Booker Tuesday and evidently it tasted really bad. The team came out to play in their first home loop game last night. They took care of the Sunray Bobcats 39-29 in a low scoring game. The Tribe played like a team possessed, jumping out to an 11-0 lead before the Bobcats could get on the scoreboard. The full court press by the Comanches was stifling.
Sunray had a goose egg on the scoreboard until 2:28 in the first period. WT fed the ball inside to big Ty Lay for back to back buckets to open the game. Chase Elliott hit a sweet trey from the corner to make it 7-0. Alex Ramirez made a sweet lay up in traffic to make it 9-0. Justin Holmberg added a nice jumper off the glass for an 11-0 lead with 3:08 to go. The Tribe led 11-2 after one, and had just one turnover in the quarter.
The Bobcats got an early bucket in the second but WT’s press didn’t let up for a second. Chase Elliott swiped the ball and got it to an open Carlos Juarez for two. Ramirez added back to back lay ups in the midst of lots of blue and gold jerseys. Nathan Forrest popped a sweet little three pointer at the buzzer to give the Comanches a 20-6 edge at halftime.
Elliott fed the ball inside to an open Holmberg for a basket to start the third. The Bobcats must have taken a rear end chewing at the half, because they were a different team in the second half. After the initial WT score, they scored seven unanswered to close the gap to ten points. Forrest swooshed another trey to put WT up 25-13. Elliott added a jump shot in the paint for a 27-13 score with 4:10 in the third. Ramirez fed the ball inside to Spencer St. Charles for two, and the Tribe led 29-17 after three.
The fourth quarter began with Juarez to Holmberg combo for back to back buckets. Juarez added a lay up to make the score 35-24 with 5:08 remaining. The Comanches started to run time off the clock with each possession after that score. With a little less than four left in the game, the Tribe had everyone spread out to work for a wide open shot a tick off valuable time. Holmberg made the next bucket after he grabbed an offensive board. Ramirez hit Holmberg under the hoop for another basket and the score was 39-24 with 1:30 remaining. Sunray added five points to their total, but posed a threat to the WT lead.
Holmberg was top Comanche with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Ramirez had 6 points and 10 boards. Forrest had two treys for 6 points, a rebound, a steal, and a block at the end of the game. Elliott scored 5 points and had 4 rebounds. Lay had 4 points, 5 boards, and a block. St. Charles had 2 points.
The Tribe is now 16-6 overall and 1-1 in District.
