On Friday afternoon, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen plan to climb up the WJCAC baseball standings hit a snag, as the Clarendon College Bulldogs won both games of the Friday doubleheader, 8-6 and 8-3.
Game One: Clarendon College 8 Frank Phillips College 6
Game one started promising for the home team, as the Plainsmen scored six runs off of seven hits. But the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead the final five innings for the comeback win.
The bottom of the second inning opened with the Plainsmen loading the bases on an interference call and singles by Alfonso Aguilar and Cesar Wong. Joel Villareal brought in the first two runs of the game, on a two RBI single, followed by a RBI hit by Richard Tordsen to make it a 3-0 game. A single by Coby Roming and a two RBI double by Andrew Landin put the Plainsmen up 6-0 giving pitcher Brad Wieck a good cushion to work with.
Wieck had a solid outing for the Plainsmen by going all seven innings and striking out five batters. But in the final four innings, the Bulldogs were able to spread eight runs on 11 hits to give the big freshman lefty his first loss of the season on the mound.
The first Bulldog run came off a home run in the third inning. The Bulldogs closed the gap to one run in the fourth by bringing in four runs on three hits to make it a 6-5 score.
In the top of the fifth and sixth innings, the Bulldogs took the lead by sending two balls over the fence for home runs.
In the sixth and seventh innings, the Plainsmen tried to get something going to spark a rally. But the Bulldogs made the plays needed and kept the Plainsmen from getting base second base to hang on for the win.
Game Two: Clarendon College 8 Frank Phillips College 3
In game two, the two teams came out hitting the ball well including Roming hitting a two RBI double and Nolan Hoskins a home run to make it a 3-3 game by the third inning. Neither two would get much going offensively the next three innings. But a RBI double into the left field corner sparked a five run seventh inning for the Bulldogs and proved to be the difference in the game.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Plainsmen tried to put together a late rally by loading the bases off a walk, a single by Wong, and a double by Tordsen. But the Bulldogs used their good infield d to get the final out to end the game and finish the Friday sweep over the Plainsmen.
Zach Johnson got the loss for the Plainsmen, going eight innings spreading out seven earned runs and 11 hits.
With Western Texas College having a conference bye this weekend, the two losses on Friday put the Plainsmen 1.5 games behind the Westerners in the loss column for fourth place in the WJCAC standings. The Plainsmen and Bulldogs wrap up their four game series on Saturday.
