On Friday night, the Canyon Eagles took advantage of a sluggish start and 32 turnovers by the Borger Bulldogs to leave Tex Hanna Gym with a 64-43 win.
The Bulldogs only connected on 5 of 17 shots in the first half, while the Eagles nailed four three pointers and 11 of 15 free throws to build a 21 point lead by halftime.
The Bulldogs started the game playing solid defense which kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for the first four minutes.
Borger senior Daniel Salinas opened the first period scoring four points, while junior Kolter Newton put in a lay up to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard early.
However, the Eagles finished the first period on a 9-2 run to build an 8-18 lead.
In the start of the second period, a pass from junior Jamon Hearon to Tyrell Haynes cut the Eagles lead to eight points. But, the Bulldogs finished the first half without putting in another shot from the floor.
The Bulldogs were able to put in five free throws in the second period. However, the Eagles took advantage of the Bulldogsâ€™ shooting woes and a 12-0 run to build a 15-36 lead by halftime.
The Bulldogsâ€™ shooting woes followed them into the third period, with the team not hitting a shot from the floor until the 2:44 mark.
The Bulldogs finally found some offense in the fourth period scoring 19 points. However, the late push would not be enough, leading the Bulldogs to open the 2011-12 season with a loss.
The Bulldogs will next take the floor on Monday evening when they travel to Canyon to take on Dimmitt ant the West Texas A&M Event Center beginning at 8:00 p.m. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season.
