Cancer survivors urged to register for RFL

April 12, 2011

With the Hutchinson County Relay For Life quickly approaching, local cancer survivors are encouraged to register for this year’s event.
Anyone in Hutchinson County who currently has or has ever been diagnosed with any type of cancer is urged to register with the Relay for Life of Hutchinson County survivor committee by Friday, May 13, 2011.
Survivors may register online at www.relayforlife.org/hutchinsoncotx or register at the Relay For Life booth at the 2011 Health Fair, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 13 at the Service Drilling Center for Access and Innovation across the street from FPC.
For more information on survivor registration, contact Survivor Chair Brandy Callahan at 806-206-9367.
“Even if you registered with our committee last year, you must register this year,” Callahan said.
She went on to say those who are registered will receive a survivor t-shirt and will be invited to the annual Hutchinson County Relay For Life Survivor Dinner, set for Tuesday, June 7. Invitations will be mailed by the committee to each registered survivor and an RSVP will be required for the banquet.
All cancer survivors are encouraged to register, regardless of the type of cancer with which they have been diagnosed. They are invited to attend the dinner and the RFL event, which will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, at Huber Park in Borger and will run through 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 11.
The highlight of the Relay is the survivor lap, which kicks off the events of the evening and each survivor and their family members and caregivers are invited to come out and walk that first lap.
During that time, all activities on the field cease as team and committee members and visitors to Relay line the track to pay tribute to Hutchinson County cancer survivors.
Luminarias honoring a survivor or in memory of someone who has lost their battle with cancer will be available again this year. The luminaria committee will be at the Relay For Life booth at the Health Fair taking donations from anyone who wishes to make a purchase. For more information, contact Luminaria Chair Callahan at the number above.
Luminarias may be purchased for a donation at the Health Fair or from any committee member. A picture honoring a cancer survivor or remembering someone who has lost their battle with cancer will be shown during the luminaria ceremony during Relay For Life of Hutchinson County.
Jeff Schiller will accept photos for the presentation. Pictures can be emailed to him at jschiller@ci.borger.tx.us. Those with questions about the presentation, contact Cathy Phillips at 806-282-4605.
The picture presentation is divided into two sections, one in honor of a survivor and the other section is a “in memory of” section. If the person you honored last year needs to be placed in the “in memory of” section, contact Schiller by email or Phillips at the number listed above.
Teams are still being formed, so if citizens are still interested in having a team or being on a team for the 2011 Relay For Life, contact Team Recruitment Chair Denise Webb by email at neecee35@hotmail.com or by phone at 806-336-6475.
