On Friday evening, the Borger Lady Bulldogs came out and proved they are a lot better team than the one that fell to the Pampa Lady Harvesters in the District 1-3A opener by 48 points on January 10th.
Unfortunately, the Lady Harvesters left Tex Hanna Gym with their second win over the Lady Bulldogs in district play, due to a steal and a quick basket in the final three seconds to give Pampa the 40-38 win.
The Lady Bulldogs had a solid night shooting from the floor hitting 16/31 shots and did a solid job defensively led by sophomore McKenzie Loftis who had seven steals in the game.
But the Lady Bulldogs struggled at the free throw line hitting 4 of 11 attempts, while the Lady Harvesters went 10 of 15 from the charity line.
Both teams opened the game a little sluggish offensively playing to a 7-9 score, in favor of Pampa, after the first period.
The Lady Harvesters would take a six point lead by the 5:$5 mark of the second period. But the Lady Bulldogs started to get some good things going offensively, starting with a three pointer by freshman Tiffanie Prater and baskets by Loftis, Emma Wood, Nellie Embers, and Katie Sizemore to give Borger a 23-20 lead at halftime.
In the third period, the Lady Bulldogs built a five point lead on a three pointer by Loftis to make it a 31-26 score at the 3:00 mark.
But the Lady Harvesters did a good job making key shots to keep the Lady Bulldogs from pulling away and cutting their deficit to one point going into the fourth period.
Pampa opened the fourth period scoring four straight points. But a basket by Loftis and a free throw by Embers tied the game up at 34-34 with 4:20 to go.
Pampa would again take the lead at the 2:09 mark. However, the Lady Bulldogs quickly tied the game up again when Loftis found an open Embers on the base line for an easy basket.
After a Lady Bulldog turnover with 56 seconds left, Pampa had an opportunity to kill the clock and take the game’s last shot.
As the clock approached five seconds, the Lady Harvesters finally took their shot which missed with the Lady Bulldogs coming up with the rebound.
However, a hard bump by the Pampa player caused the ball to come loose from the Lady Bulldog player’s hand, leading Pampa to get the quick steal and put in the game winning shot as the buzzer sounded.
The heartbreaking loss sends the Lady Bulldogs to 0-4 in district play, 4-18 overall, while Pampa improves to 2-2 in district and 12-12 overall.
The Lady Bulldogs will next host Dalhart on Tuesday, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
