PAMPA-On Friday evening, District 1-3A play finally got underway with the Borger Bulldogs traveling to take on the Pampa Harvesters for the next chapter of the Texas Panhandle’s best rivalry.
Both teams came in with identical 3-4 record, but throughout the night the Bulldogs proved they were the better team by putting together a dominating performance on both sides of the ball in their 31-6 win.
After sitting out most of the past three games with a leg injury, senior running back Ty Brown returned to the field for the Bulldogs and had a big night giving the Harvester defense headaches by rushing for 284 yards and three touchdowns.
In their first possession, Pampa quarterback Reid Miller quickly ran for 19 yards to get near midfield. But the Bulldog defense tightened up to force the Harvester’s to punt the ball.
In their first possession of the night, the Bulldogs established their running game by ramming the ball through the Harvester’s defense on a 11 play drive which set up Alexis Aguilar for a 30 yard field goal with 3:08 mark in the first quarter to give Borger a 3-0 lead.
After the Havesters’ first drive, the Bulldog defense shut down Pampa the remainder of the first half, limiting them to just 26 yards of total offense.
On the other side of the ball, the Bulldogs opened the second quarter putting together a nine play drive with Brown capping it off with a 14 yards touchdown run to make it a 10-0 score.
Before the half, another great stance by the Bulldogs’ defense gave the offense enough time to put together a quick six play touchdown drive to go up 17-0 at halftime.
Bulldogs’ quarterback Jacob Rendon opened the drive by finding senior receiver Tyler Ortega for a nice 36 yard pass to get to the Harvesters’ 31 yard line. Five plays later, Brown went in for his second touchdown of the night on a 19 yard run.
The Bulldogs began the third quarter continuing to pound the ball on the ground to wear out the Harvesters’ defense and kill time off the clock.
The Harvesters’ appeared to get a break by forcing the Bulldogs to punt on their own 17 yard line. However, the Harvester return man misplayed the punt giving the Bulldogs the ball on their 45 yard line.
Seven plays later, Brown scored his third touchdown of the night on a nine yard run to make the score 24-7 with 6:40 to go in the third quarter.
The Harvesters’ finally got something going on offense by putting together a 15 play 58 yard drive. However the drive came away empty handed with the Harvesters coming short on a 40 yard field goal attempt.
The Bulldogs capped off the night by putting together a nice nine play scoring drive which ended with junior Aaron McKee finding the end zone on a four yard touchdown run to make the score 31-0.
The Harvesters were able to keep from being shut out, when junior running back Sammy Smith broke free for an 81 yard touchdown run to finally put Pampa on the scoreboard.
The win over Pampa takes the Bulldogs to 4-4 for the season and 1-0 in District 1-3A play.
Next week, the Bulldogs will travel to Dalhart in what will probably decide who wins the District 1-3A title when they take on the Dalhart Golden Wolves.
