Bulldogs keep rolling, beat Pampa 13-3

April 18, 2011

Senior Acton Smith (#11) sends the ball to the plate for a strike during the third inning against Pampa on Saturday. Smith got the win on the mound going five innings giving up six hits and three earned runs.

In an era where television shows, movies and music from the 1970’s and 1980’s is revamped for a new generation, perhaps it would be fitting to call this year’s version of the Borger Bulldogs the “Big Red Machine” for the way the team continues to hit the ball in District 1-3A play.
For the fourth game in a row, the Bulldogs put on another hitting clinic on Saturday afternoon that included two three-run homers and a two-run homer on their way to getting a 13-3 win over the Pampa Harvesters in five innings.
The Bulldogs didn’t waste much time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning, with Garrett Irwin hitting an RBI single followed by a three- run homerun by Brandon Garcia giving Borger a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Bulldogs built their lead to 6-0 on another RBI single by Irwin and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Hertel.
Senior Acton Smith got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and once again did a good job against the Harvesters in limiting them to three runs on six hits through five innings of work.
In the four and fifth innings, the Harvesters finally cracked the scoreboard to pull back to within three 6-3. But the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Big Red Machine cranking up once again by sending eight batters to the plate and scoring seven runs.
Smith and Clay Ellis got the inning going by collecting RBIs before junior Chayse Tracy sent the ball over the rightfield fence for a three run homerun to make it a 11-3 score.
Kody Davila followed Tracy by hitting a single, setting up junior Max Lusk to end the game with a two run homer to force the run-rule at 13-3.
With the win and Dalhart’s loss to Perryton, the Bulldogs have clinched a spot in the playoffs, but now the team will try to finish the third round of district play strong in order to claim the district crown.
Borger improves to 5-1 in District 1-3A play, 14-10-1 overall, and will next host Dalhart tomorrow evening starting at 5:00 p.m.
At the plate: Chayse Tracy 2/3 1 HR 3 RBI’s; Garrett Irwin 2/3 2 RBI’s; Max Lusk 2/4 1 HR 1 2B 2 RBI’s; Zach McDonald 3/3; Kody Davila 2/2; Brandon Garica ½ 1 HR 3 RBI’s.
On the mound: Acton Smith-5 inning 6 hits 4 K’s 3 earned runs.
