On Friday evening, the Borger Bulldogs benefited from their strong running game and physical defense to come away with a 27-23 over the Bushland Falcons at Bulldog Stadium.
After giving up 571 yards to Caprock last Thursday, the Bulldog defense looked like a completely different unit on Friday night limiting the Falcons’ offense to 246 yards of total offense.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs did not have to worry about moving the ball in the air due to racking up 342 yards on the ground, led senior Adam Bumpus rushing for 228 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.
The Bulldogs started Friday night’s game on fire relying on the ground game to score two early touchdowns, while the Falcons were limited to just 39 yards of offense in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs first drive started in Falcons’ territory, where the offensive line opened up the holes for senior Ty Brown to gain 23 yards setting up Bumpus to punch the ball into the end zone for an 11 yard touchdown run to give Borger a 7-0 lead.
Before the first quarter ended, Bumpus collected his second touchdown of the quarter when he took the good option pitch, in the open field, from quarterback Jacob Rendon running for 64 yards to the end zone to make it a 14-0 game.
In the second quarter, the Bulldog offense saw limited action on the field, while the Falcons had four drives starting inside the Bulldogs’ 40 yard line.
The Falcons put points on scoreboard off a five yard run by Frank Byers and a safety. However, the Bulldog defense did a good job limiting the Falcons offense giving Borger a 14-9 lead at halftime.
To start the third quarter, the Falcons had a big break when the Bulldogs misplayed the kickoff to give Bushland the ball at the Bulldogs seven yard line. But, the Bulldog defense made a great stance to force the Falcons to turn the ball over on downs.
On their next drive, the Falcons took their only lead in the game when quarterback Taylor Cornelius connected with Blake Cummings for a 35 yard touchdown pass to make it a 14-16 score at the 7:13 mark of the third quarter.
Fortunately it didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to regain the momentum when Bumpus broke free for a 53 yard touchdown run to give Borger back the lead, 21-16.
The Bulldogs finished the third quarter seeing Rendon scoring on a seven yard run on a five play 67 yard drive to take a 27-16 lead.
The Falcons continued to fight hard putting together a eight play drive to pull back to within four points on a T.Cornelius 18 yard touchdown pass to Colin Cornelius to make it a 27-23 game with 3:26 to go.
But the Bulldogs kept a Falcon comeback from taking place, as the Bulldog offensive line again opened holes for Bumpus and junior Aaron McKee to go on a eight play 67 yard drive to run out the clack and give the Bulldogs the win.
Borger now moves to 1-2 for the season while Bushland suffers their first loss to drop to 2-1.
The Bulldogs will be on the road next Friday, traveling to take on the Dumas Demons starting at 7:30 p.m.
