Seventeen seniors for the Borger Bulldogs were honored on Friday night in the final home football game of their career. These are seventeen guys who are good friends, team-players, and inspiring leaders for the younger Bulldogs to look up to.
Both teams came into the contest with a 1-1 district record. The Perryton Rangers came to town needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, their loss being to Pampa. Borger was hoping to spoil those hopes, but came up short in another close one, losing 17-14 in a very defensive, very hard-fought battle.
Play started with Perryton receiving, and Suttle was there on the stop. Jensen, who had a great night defensively, had a tackle for the 2 yard loss on 1st and 15. Perryton gained a few yards on 2nd, and Jensen and Hearon had great coverage down the field to force an incomplete on 3rd. Perryton is forced to punt from their own 16, and it is a bad punt. Borger takes over on the Perryton 41 with great field position.
Guinn pushed ahead for 2 before McKee is knocked back for a loss of 3 on 2nd down. On 3rd and 12, Freeman is stuffed, and Borger is forced to punt on a 3 and out. The Henry punt is down to the Perryton 13. On 1st and 10 from the 13, the Rangers fumble and Gowdy recovers it at the 10. On 1st and 10 for Borger, they give it right back as Freeman fumbles and Perryton recovers.
After trading fumbles, Perryton started their drive from the 11. Suttle, Brooks, and Orona make a great stop on 2nd down, but the Rangers move it to the 33 on the next down. Henry has great coverage down the field and Galloway makes a nice play before Perryton gets it past midfield. Galloway makes three great defensive plays to force a 3rd and 18. Easley puts some pressure on the quarterback to force a Perryton punt.
Borger receives and goes to work from their own 45. Guinn is dropped for a loss, but Salinas made up for that with a 5 yard reception on 2nd down. On 3rd and 9, Guinn kept it and rushed ahead for 10 yards and the 1st down. Butler (who carried many Rangers on his back the entire game) had a gain of 8 before a holding penalty was called on Borger. An illegal procedure penalty on Borger made it 3rd and 17 from their own 48. Trying something new, Hunter passed it down field to Weber. It was incomplete, but pass interference was called on the Rangers. It was 1st and 10 on the Perryton 37. Freeman had no gain, and there is holding on the play to push the Bulldogs back. Butler rushed for 4, and Guinn completes to Salinas for 9, but the Dogs would turn over on downs after a nice drive to the Perryton 31.
The 2nd quarter begins with no score and Perryton with the ball on their own 31. Easley had a great tackle for a Ranger loss of 2 yards. The Rangers move it quickly down the field and march it down to the Borger 23 after two big gains. Perryton strikes first and quick with a 23 yard passing touchdown to make it 7-0 with 10:14 left in the 2nd.
Borger takes over, and Salinas returned it to their own 38 to start a long drive. Butler picked up 13 big yards on 1st, carrying half the Ranger team with him for 4 of those yards. McKee and Guinn pick up 9 yards, and on 4th and 2 from the Ranger 41, Butler rumbled ahead for 14 more yards and the 1st down. Gowdy, McKee, and Butler combine for 14 more yards and get it to the Perryton 13. A Guinn to Weber pass is incomplete, and Guinn is sacked to make it 4th and 20 from the 22. Guinn passed to the endzone and Salinas leaps to make the amazing catch. He is hit very hard and goes flying, but holds on for the completion. He is stopped short at the 2, but it is a 1st down. Guinn sneaks it to the 6 inch line and Butler did the rest. He flew over the Perryton defenders to score for the Dogs on a nice 7 minute drive and the Dogs tie it up at 7 after the Aguilar extra point with 3:10 left in the half.
Perryton receives and immediately has a long pass to get it to the Borger 31. That wouldn't matter, though, as Jensen intercepts it on the very next play on the Borger 15, halting the Perryton momentum.
Borger takes over and Butler immediately sped ahead for 20 yards. Freeman picks up 5 more, but Borger is penalized 15 yards for tripping and backed up to their own 21. McKee and Butler pick up 10, and a pass to Salinas only nets 3 yards, forcing a punt. There is a bad snap on the punt (something that has been an issue before), and Perryton takes over on the Borger 19. Brooks puts pressure on the quarterback and the pass is incomplete. There are only 14 seconds remaining in the half. Salinas has great coverage and knocks away what could have been a touchdown pass for Perryton. They settle on a field goal, and take a 10-7 lead with 4.5 seconds left in the half. Borger receives, and time runs out to end the 1st half.
Borger receives to start the 2nd half and Jensen takes it to the 33. On 1st and 10, the Dogs fumble and Perryton recovered on the Borger 40. McKee had great coverage to force an incomplete, Gowdy and Henry made a great tackle, but the Rangers pick up a 1st. That wouldn't matter though, as Gowdy makes a great play and intercepted the Ranger pass to give Borger the ball on their own 22.
Butler and Freeman go to work, picking up 15 yards. It eventually becomes 3rd and 9 from the Borger 35, when Guinn made a great pass to his favorite receiver, Salinas for a 24 yard gain. On the 41, Butler fought ahead for some short yardage, and so did McKee. On 4th and short, Butler converted for the 1st down on the 30. Freeman loses yards and a pass to Lacy is incomplete to bring up 3rd and 13. Freeman picked up 10 hard fought yards, and Butler picked up the other 3 needed for a first. McKee picked up 3 more and Guinn kept it to get 7 more. It was now 1st and goal from the 10, and Freeman pushes ahead for 6, and then into the endzone for a Bulldog touchdown. Aguilar's kick is good and Borger goes up 14-10 with 3:13 left in the 3rd.
Perryton receives on their own 29. Suttle, Easley, Gowdy, and Jeter all make good plays for the Dog defense. On 2nd and 20, Suttle makes a shoestring tackle on the quarterback. After the play, Easley is laying facedown on the grass, clearly hurt. He was eventually carted off on a stretcher and taken by ambulance. Updates on his condition were not available at press time.
Jeter pressured the quarterback to force an incomplete and a Ranger punt. Borger receives on their own 16 hoping to add to their lead. Freeman rushed ahead for 6, and Butler breaks free for 19 yards behind some great blocks from the line. McKee and Butler keep it going for the Dogs, getting it to the Ranger 35. The Ranger defense would hold, as a pass from Guinn to Weber falls incomplete, and the Dogs are unable to convert a 4th down, giving it back to Perryton on their own 33 with 9:25 left.
Villigran and Gowdy are in on the tackle and Galloway covers down field, but Perryton has a big gain on 3rd down plus a facemask penalty on the Dogs. It is on the Borger 39 when Jensen is there for the spectacular interception on the 32. Borger now has another chance to put some points up, but they go 3 and out, only gaining 6 yards.
Perryton starts their drive from their own 37, and Henry was close to an interception. McKee, Henry, Suttle, and Jensen all make big plays on defense to force Perryton to punt. Borger starts on the 20, but can't get anything going again and go 3 and out. Henry punts it to the Borger 47.
The Rangers take over with 3:09 left and good field position. An incomplete pass and a penalty made it 2nd and 20 for Perryton, but on 3rd and 13, they march it to the Borger 23 with two minutes remaining. Perryton keeps their drive alive after picking up 10 on a 3rd and 2. They take it to the 5, and then into the end zone for a touchdown with 50.5 seconds left in the game.
Borger receives, and Butler returns it to the 34. Working quickly, Guinn starts throwing passes. A pass to Marrs is dropped, but a pass to Henry is complete for 21 yards to the Perryton 45. The next pass fell incomplete, and the Dogs were running out of time. A pass from Guinn to Myers at the 20 was good, but a Borger holding penalty brings it back to the 45. Two more passes from Guinn to the end zone fall incomplete, and Perryton holds on for the win, 17-14, in another heartbreaker for Borger.
Borger finished with 275 total yards, 191 rushing and 84 passing. Guinn was 6/13 with 84 yards passing and 14 yards rushing, with no interceptions. Salinas had 5 catches for 63 yards and Henry 1 for 21 yards. Butler finished with 20 carries and 123 yards and one touchdown. Freeman finished with 17 carries for 44 yards and one touchdown. Borger had 21 1st downs.
They have lost 4 games this year by 3 points, and one game by 1 point this year. They are now 1-2 in district, but not out of playoff contention since they beat Pampa last week. They play 0-3 River Road in Amarillo next Friday night in their last regular season game.
