PAMPA-Through two rounds of District 1-3A play, it is known which three teams are going to make it to the playoffs, but who will end up as the district champions is still up in the air.
After losing to the Pampa Harvesters 8-3 in the first round of district play, the Borger Bulldogs were able to get some revenge on Saturday by getting a 9-7 win at Harvester Field in Pampa.
The Bulldogs jumped on top early by using three straight singles to bring in the first run of the game. With the bases loaded, Ben Sharp would get hit by a wild pitch, allowing Max Lusk to walk across home plate to make it a 2-0 score. Pampa would settle down in the field, but no before Kota Dillard brought in another Bulldog run on a sacrifice fly to center field to give Borger a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldog lead didn’t last long, as the Harvesters used three hits and two errors to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-4 lead.
The next three innings turned into a good defense and pitcher’s duel by Borger’s Garth Payton and Pampa’s Collin Killgo. After struggling with control issues in the first inning, Payton was able to settle down and pitch 5 1/3 innings where he struck out seven batters while giving up two earned runs on six hits.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs tied the score with Grant Boren leading off the inning with a triple before being brought in on an RBI single by Colten Hunter.
Hunter continued to have the hot bat in the sixth inning by hitting a two RBI double to give Borger a 6-4 lead. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the sixth inning on a passed ball at home plate and a two RBI double by Clay Ellis to make it a 9-4 score.
Pampa put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning using a two RBI double and a RBI single to pull to within two runs, 9-7. But the Bulldogs got off the field with the win as Chayse Tracy got a strikeout on the mound for the third out to give Borger the big win.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 4-2 in District 1-3A play, where they are tied with Pampa and Perryton for first place with identical 4-2 records. After two rounds of district play, the three teams have split their first two games against each other.
Round three of district play begins on Tuesday with the Bulldogs traveling to Dalhart for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch. The Bulldogs return to Huber Park on Saturday to host the Perryton Rangers beginning at noon.
