Bulldogs come up short in OT Homecoming loss
Friday night was homecoming for the Borger Bulldogs, and they put on quite a show for the packed stadium against the visiting Dumas Demons. They took the game to overtime, but eventually fell by 7 in a heartbreaker of a loss. Austin Henry would receive for the Bulldogs and return to midfield and a face mask penalty on Dumas would give the Bulldogs excellent field position to start the game. After a Dontrae Butler carry for 7 yards, the Dogs were facing 3rd and 3. Butler carries for another 7 yards to get the first down, and then 4 more to get it to the Dumas 20. Jacob Rendon keeps it for a 12 yard rush and it is 1st and goal for the Bulldogs. After three plays with no gain, Alexis Aguilar came out for the field goal attempt. The attempt was blocked and Dumas would take over on their own 35.Henry came out with a tackle for a 4 yard loss, but Dumas takes it past midfield on 2nd down and 14. They would eventually score from 24 yards out for the first points of the game. Dumas was up 7-0 with1:36 left in the first.Chance Lacy would receive for the Bulldogs and return it to the Bulldog 35. Kendrick Freeman rushes for 9 yards and Butler for 1, and the Bulldogs pick up the 1st down to end the first quarter. The second quarter begins with two rushes for Freeman for -1 yard, and the Bulldogs couldn't put together a drive. Henry would punt it to the Dumas 33.Dumas marches past midfield and Henry has a nice stop at the Bulldog 40. The Demons pass it to the 29, and Jonathan Jeter has the stop for the Bulldogs. Henry has another great tackle, and it is 3rd down for Dumas. After a penalty on the Bulldogs, it is 1st and 10. Sean Easley drops the Demons for a two yard loss to bring up 2nd and 13. Despite the solid tackling, Dumas would find the endzone again on the next play to make it 14-0 with 4:28 left in the first half.On 1st and 10, the Bulldogs get it to their own 49 yard line with a pass from Rendon to Jared Salinas. Freeman would rush for 8 and then again for 4 to earn the first down for the Dogs on the Demon 35 yard line. On the very next play, Rendon would connect with Lacy for a 35 yard touchdown reception for the Bulldogs' first points of the game. The extra point attempt was no good, and the score was 14-6 with 2:11 left in the half. Dumas would receive on their own 34 as Aaron McKee is there for the tackle. On the very next play, the Demons would connect for a long pass down the field to the Bulldog 25 yard line. Creed Brooks would have the nice tackle on the Bulldog 11. On 3rd and 2, the Demons get it to the 1 yard line, and march it in for another score before the half ends. The score is 21-6 at the half in favor of the Demons.Dumas receives on their own 36 to start the second half. They quickly get past midfield, and Tanner Gowdy is there for the tackle. Then, the Demons are picked off by Jamon Hearon who comes up with the big interception on the Bulldog 46. Freeman rushes for 5 yards, and an incomplete pass find the Bulldogs facing 3rd and 5. Freeman breaks lose on 3rd down and rushes for a 33 yard gain to the Bulldog 17. Freeman then gets it to the 11 yard line before Rendon rushes for 8 yards to set up the Bulldogs on their own 3 yard line. Rendon keeps it and finds the endzone behind the great blocking from David Gutierrez, Daniel Orona, Fred McKinney, and Dustin Tucker. The Rendon rush for the two point conversion is good, and the Bulldogs cut the lead to 7. It is now 21-14 with 9:18 left in the third.Dumas receives on their own 26, and Zach Suttle has the stop. On 1st and 15, Fernandez puts pressure on the quarterback causing an incomplete. On 2nd and 15, however, Dumas passes down the field for a 65 yard touchdown. Dumas strikes quickly, and they are up 28-14 with 7:44 left in the third.Lacy has another solid return for the Bulldogs, setting them up on their own 49. The Bulldogs can't get anything going, and go four and out. On the punt, the ball is snapped over the kicker's head and the Demons take over on the Bulldog 7 yard line.A touchdown for Dumas is called back because of a holding penalty, and the Demons are now on the Bulldog 12 yard line. The Demons pass to the endzone is picked off by McKee for the Bulldogs, and they have new life, starting on their own 20.On 1st and 10, Rendon breaks free for a 70 yard gain, but the play would be called back because of a chop block penalty on the Dogs. After the penalty, Salinas has a reception for 12 yards and Butler rushes for 12 more. Freeman and Butler each rush for 6 to take it to the Dumas 37 yard line. Rendon then connects with Colton Hunter for a 17 yard reception on 1st down. The Dogs were on the Dumas 19 and looking for the endzone. The ball is snapped to Rendon, who is under heavy pressure from the Demon defense. As he is going down, he throws to the endzone and finds Salinas who makes a spectacular catch for the Dogs. The Aguilar kick is good, and the score is 28-21 with 2:46 left in the third.Dumas receives and starts on their own 18 after a penalty. Jeter stuffs the Demons for no loss, and then sacks the quarterback for a loss of two yards. The Demons take it to the 31, however, on a Bulldog penalty. Jeter has yet another stopon 1st down, and Salinas the stop on 2nd down to end the third quarter.The Demons fight for the first down, and they are on their own 42. Dumas coughs up the ball on the next play, and none other than Jeter recovers it on the Bulldog 31. Rendon shovels a pass to Butler for 8 yards and Freeman rushes for two for the Bulldog first down. Butler rushes for no gain and Rendon finds Zac Guinn for an eight yard gain to bring up 3rd and 2 at midfield. Freeman rushes for two, and after the measurement on the field, the Dogs have a first down. Butler rushes for six, and Rendon adds another six behind the great blocking from Orona. Rendon keeps it again and finds a hole for nine more yards to the Demon 25. Rendon keeps it yet again and fights for three yards and the first down. On 1st and 10 from the 23, Butler finds his blockers and finds the endzone on a nice run. The Aguilar kick is good, and the Bulldogs have tied the game at 28 with 6:41 left in the game.Now the Bulldog defense would go to work. Christian Fernandez comes out with a hard hit to keep the Demons on their own 25. Henry would have the tackle on first down, and Brooks the tackle on second down. Dumas would pick up 15 yards before Brooks and Suttle combine for a sack and a loss of 2 yards. McKee and Gowdy would combine for another tackle, and Jeter would sack the Demons on 4th and 7. The Bulldogs take over on the Dumas 48 with 2:28 left in the fourth.Butler almost breaks free on 1st down, but is tripped up by his own player and only gains two yards. Rendon runs for 12 yards to take it to the Dumas 34. A pass to Hunter is broken up and Freeman is stuffed for no gain, and the Dogs are facing 4th and 8 and running out of time. An 8 yard pass to Hunter is complete, and Myers receives for another 7 yards to the Demon 24 with 16.7 seconds left on the clock. On 2nd and 3, the Dogs choose to kick the field goal. Aguilar's kick is short, and the game heads to overtime.In overtime play, each team starts on the 25 attempting to score. It is not sudden death, and each team gets a chance to score. Dumas starts on the 25, and on the second play of the drive passes it for 25 yards and the quick score to go up 35-28 in the overtime period.The Bulldogs now have to answer to escape defeat. Freeman and Butler are both dropped for losses on 1st and 2nd down. On 3rd and 13, Dumas is penalized to make it 3rd and 8 for the Dogs. Rendon is brought down in what looked like a horse collar tackle, but there is no call on the play. The Bulldogs have one last shot at the endzone, but the pass is just past the fingertips of receiver Hearon. The final score in Borger is 35-28 in favor of the Demons.The Dogs put up a great fight and converted points out of turnovers. The defense was much impoved this week for the Bulldogs, having many tackles for losses and three sacks.Borger finished with 293 total yards to Dumas' 348. They had 112 total passing yards and 181 total rushing yards and 20 first downs. Rendon was 7/18 with 112 yards and two touchdowns and a two point conversion. Lacy had 35 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Salinas had two catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. Butler had 100 yards rushing and Freeman 70 on the night. The Bulldogs had only one turnover compared to Dumas' three.The Bulldogs will travel to Randall next Friday night to take on the Raiders at 7:30. Come out and support these hard-working young men!
