On Friday night, the Borger Bulldogs overcame a bad second period and 19 turnovers in their come from behind 38-36 win over the Gruver Greyhounds in Gruver’s new basketball palace.
The comeback was the result of the team not letting their frustrations get the best of them and instead finding a way to make plays when they needed to in the fourth period, with each player on the roster contributing in the win.
The game started good for the Bulldogs as junior Jamon Hearon scored five points in the first minute to give Borger a quick 5-0 lead.
The Greyhounds finally got on the scoreboard, but a three pointer by senior Grant Boren and senior Aaron Smith finding Daniel Salinas in the paint for an easy bucket helped the Bulldogs finish the first period strong and hold a 13-11 lead.
In the second period, the Bulldogs were ice cold on the floor by going 0/11 for the floor. The Bulldogs shooting woes allowing the Greyhounds to take the lead and go up by seven points at halftime, 13-20.
Ten seconds into the third period, the Bulldogs finally got out of their shooting funk with a lay up by junior Kolter Newton.
Another three pointer by Boren pulled the Bulldogs to within two points. However, the Greyhounds responded by converting a steal into a lay up and taking advantage of free throw opportunities to end the third period with a seven point lead, 24-33.
The fourth period began with Smith hitting a three pointer, which sparked a 10-1 run by the Bulldogs. The 10-1 run gave Borger the opportunity to tie the game at 34-34 by a three pointer by Newton with 3:30 left on the clock.
Gruver responded by going inside to take back the lead 34-36. But Newton would scored four straight points on fast breaks to pull the Bulldogs ahead for good.
