WOLFORTH-On Monday afternoon, the Brownwood Lady Lions scored three goals in a 10-minute span, in the second half, to pull away for the 4-0 win over the Borger Lady Bulldogs in the 4A Area Round playoffs at Frenship High School.
Due to a strong wind from the south, each team enjoyed having an extra teammate in Mother Nature for a half of play. Unfortunately, the Lady Lions would be the team taking advantage of the wind, by scoring three goals and being able to keep the ball on one side of the field for the majority of the second half.
The Lady Bulldogs started the game aggressive and were able to use the wind to push the ball ahead to Bethany Barnhart who had a good angle for a potential goal in the third minute of play. Barnhart would take the shot but the ball landed just short of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
By using the wind to push the ball ahead again, the Lady Bulldogs had another chance to get on the scoreboard in the 13th minute, with Sammi Huckabee breaking free for a good look at the goal. But once again the Lady Bulldogs came away empty handed as Huckabee’s shot could not get past the Brownwood goalie.
In the first half, Borger goalkeeper Emma Wood did a solid job by making five saves in the first 25 minutes of play.
Unfortunately, in the 32nd minute, Brownwood was able to crack the scoreboard by putting the ball in the goal just over the head of Wood to take a 0-1 lead.
To start the second half, Brownwood came out playing aggressive and was able to control the ball for much of the final 40 minutes of play in Lady Bulldog territory. The aggressive play paid off in the 45th minute with Brownwood scoring their second goal followed by the Lady Lions finding an open corner just three minutes later to build a 0-3 lead.
Brownwood continued to be aggressive leading to the Lady Lions scoring the final goal of the game in the 55th minute to give the 0-4 score.
The Lady Bulldogs battled hard throughout the second half. But the team never was able to put themselves in position to get a good shot at the goal to try put together a late comeback.
Brownwood will next take on Amarillo Caprock in the Regional Quarterfinals, while the Lady Bulldogs 2012 season comes to an end.
