Borger's season comes to a close
The Borger Bulldogs made their way to Lubbock for their bi-district playoff game against the Andrews Mustangs on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs used a 22 point second half to surge past Borger, 49-28. The Dogs finish 2-9 on the season.Borger won the toss and deferred to the second half. It is quickly 3rd and 9 for the Mustangs after tackles from Weber and Easley. The ball comes lose on 3rd down and Gowdy jumps on it for Borger on the Andrews 33 yard line.It didn't take long for Borger to strike first, as Butler breaks free for 28 yards and then scored from the 1. The Aguilar kick was good and the Dogs enjoyed a 7-0 lead early.Andrews takes over on their own 32. Suttle, Jeter, Jensen, Salinas, and Henry led a host of Dogs in big tackles on the series. The Mustangs drove it to the Borger 36, but turned it over on downs.Borger goes three and out on their next series, with Freeman and Butler picking up just 6 yards, and Newcomb is forced to punt.Andrews received on their own 30. On 3rd and 4, Andrews fumbled, but the ball goes out of bounds. The Mustangs got it past midfield, but are then backed up to their own 47 on a penalty. Andrews has a big play down the field to the Borger 16, and then ahead to the 1. The rushing TD tied the game at 7 with 2:38 left in the first.Borger took over on their own 35 after the Hunter return. Butler can't break free, and a pass to Salinas fell incomplete. The Dogs again go three and out, and Newcomb had a nice punt to the Andrews 25.Andrews got the ball back with about a minute to go in the quarter. On 2nd and 9, Jeter tipped the Hammack pass and almost intercepted it. On 3rd and 9, Hammack completes to Ridge for a 60 yard score that took 45 seconds off the clock. Andrews goes up 14-7 with 17 seconds left in the first.The second quarter began with Borger on their own 31. Freeman and Guinn picked up short yardage before Butler broke loose for a long run. The play would be called back because of a penalty, but more importantly, Butler was down. He left the game with a left leg injury and would not return.The Dogs cannot convert and punt it away.Andrews received on their own 31, and scored on the first play of the series. A 69 yard pass from Hammack to Quevas found the end zone and they go up 21-7 on Borger with 10:00 left in the half.Freeman received for Borger and took it all the way out to the 47 on a nice run. The Dogs rely heavily on their rushing, but took to the air for this series. After an incomplete and two false start penalties, Borger was backed up to their own 37 and it was 2nd and 20. Guinn completed a pass to Henry for 19 yards, and then kept it to earn the 1st down. Freeman picks up 18 tough yards to the Andrews 24. Guinn found Hunter for a big completion, but he is stopped short of the goal line. Guinn punched it in himself for the score on the next play. The score now reads 21-14 Andrews with 8:10 still remaining in the half.Andrews started on their own 18 after a nice stop on the return by Mesneak. Easley, Gowdy, and Suttle are all in on tackles for Borger, but the Mustangs could not be stopped. Hammack scores for the Mustangs to go up 27-14 with 6:02 left in the half. The Bulldogs went three and out on the next series, with passes to Hunter and Henry falling incomplete. Andrews started on their own 47, but they don't keep the ball for long. Hammack's pass is intercepted by Jensen on the Borger 36, his fourth on the year.Freeman fumbled after an 8 yard gain, but Myers got on top of it for the Dogs. Gardner picks up 10 yards for Borger, along with 7 from Guinn to take it to the Andrews 39. Salinas makes a nice move down field to break free from his defender, and Guinn found him for the 39 yard touchdown pass. The deficit is cut to 6 with 2:16 left in the half.Galloway and Gowdy have nice stops for the Dogs. On the Andrews 45, Suttle hit the Mustang offender hard and forced a fumble. Andrews jumped on it, but not before they lost 9 yards. On 3rd and 19 from the 36, Salinas covered his defender and intercepted the pass on the Borger 34. He returns it all the way to the Mustang 7 yard line. Freeman got it to the 3 before Guinn punches in another score. The kick is good and Borger goes into the half with a 28-27 lead.Guinn was 4-9 at the half with 86 yards and a passing touchdown to Salinas. He also had 20 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground.The second half began with Borger on offense. Hunter brings it out to the Borger 36, where Guinn breaks free for 15 yards and past midfield. Guinn completes to Henry for 10 and Myers for 12 before the Dogs fumble on the snap on the Andrews 26.Brooks, Jensen, Henry, and Salinas all make great defensive plays, but Andrews is able to drive to the 29. Jeter has a monstrous sack for a loss of 13 yards. Suttle and Galloway stop Andrews on the next two downs, and they are forced to punt. The punt falls just inside the 1 yard line.It looks as if Borger will go three and out, but Guinn is intercepted on 3rd and 7. Andrews takes it in for the score, the two point conversion is good, and Andrews leads 35-38 with 3:57 left in the third.Borger had a nice drive going on their next series. Guinn has two big gains, and Freeman and Gardner pick up enough yardage for a first. It became 4th and 4 from the 19, but Guinn is stuffed for no gain, and the Dogs turn over on downs.Suttle, Gowdy, Henry, Jensen, and Mesneak lead the defense on the next series, but Andrews is able to score on a 17 yard Hammack pass to Luna. The kick is no good and the Mustangs lead is now 41-28.Borger takes over on their own 26. Freeman has a 13 yard gain on 2nd and 6, but is then stuffed for no gain. Guinn's pass is intercepted on the Andrews 46 and ran back 48 yards to the Borger 10.Gowdy knocks down the pass on first down, and Andrews is called for holding and then a false start to make it 2nd and 25. Then, Borger is called for back-to-back offsides penalties to bring up a 3rd and 17. On 4th and long, the Mustang receiver is wide open for the touchdown pass. The two point conversion is good and Andrews finds themselves up 49-28.Borger cannot get anything going and turn it over on downs. Brooks, Salinas, Weber, and Gowdy lead the Dog defense on the next series to force a turnover on downs from Andrews with 22 seconds left.Freeman picks up 23 yards on Borger's last series to end the game. Final was 49-28. The Bulldogs did not score in the 2nd half of play.Borger picked up 15 first downs in the contest compared to Andrews' 25. Borger finished with 307 total yards, with 199 of those on the ground. Andrews finished with 515 total yards, 371 of those were through the air. Borger punted 4 times compared to just 1 from the Mustangs. Freeman led all Borger rushers with 89 yards on 19 carries. Guinn carried for 67 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns. Guinn was 7 for 17 with 108 yards passing and one touchdown through the air. Henry had 3 receptions for 29 yards, and Salinas had 1 reception for 39 yards and one touchdown. Suttle led the Borger defense with 9 tackles and Henry and Gowdy finished with 8 a piece. The O-line for the Dogs was spectacular, allowing no sacks on their young quarterback.Borger finishes out a year in which their only wins were two big wins in district to get them into the playoffs.Coach James Day told reporters after the game, “It was nice to finish in the playoffs, but like I told the kids, I don’t want to have to hope that things have to work right for us to get in. I want to earn our way in. Today's loss wasn't because of a lack of effort from these guys. We had mental lapses here and there that cost us.”The young Bulldogs return plenty of talent next year, as Guinn, Freeman, Butler, Gowdy, Henry, and many other experienced guys will be back. They have made the playoffs four consecutive years, and the future looks bright to keep that streak going.
