Solid pitching, good defense and a three-run third inning proved to be a winning combination Saturday afternoon as the Borger Bulldogs defeated the Pecos Eagles 5-2 in game two of the best of three 3A Area Round series.
Borger took the series two games to none and advances to the 3A Regional Quarterfinals against Lubbock Cooper next weekend.
The Bulldogs received a solid performance on the mound by senior Acton Smith, who went all seven innings, scattering nine hits for two earned runs.
Edmundo Dominguez started off well on the mound for Pecos in the first two innings. However, the Bulldogs started giving him some problems in the top of the third inning with back to back singles and a hit batter to load the bases.
Borger senior Brandon Garcia broke the scoreless tie by bringing in Max Lusk on an error by the Eagle third baseman.
The Pecos defense helped Dominguez out by pulling a 6-4-3 double play, but the second Borger run would cross home to make it a 2-0 game.
Before Pecos got off the field in the third inning, junior Clay Ellis brought in the third Bulldog run of the inning on an error by the shortstop to give Borger a 3-0 lead.
Pecos threatened to tie the game in the bottom half of the third by loading the bases with no outs.
An Eagle run would score on a fielder’s choice to second, however, as the Bulldogs would give up just the lone run, with an interference call on a base runner and a pop out ending the Pecos threat.
The score stayed 3-1 until the top of the fifth when Garcia hit a RBI double giving Borger a 4-1 lead.
Pecos added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, thanks to two singles and an error.
However, the Bulldogs’ defense finished the game strong while Hunter Hertel added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to give Borger the 5-2 win and the series.
Borger and Lubbock Cooper will play in a three game series this coming weekend at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.
Game one of the series will start at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening with game two starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by game three if necessary.
