Borger takes care of Pampa 13-5

April 6, 2011

Borger senior Kody Davila (#14) puts the ball in play on Tuesday evening in Pampa.

PAMPA-After a rough outing in Perryton on Saturday, there was plenty of curiosity in wondering how the Borger Bulldogs would respond when they took the field in Pampa on Tuesday to take on the District 1-3A leading Harvesters.
Fortunately it looks as if Saturday’s loss lit a fire under the Bulldogs. The team put together a game that included good pitching, solid defense and hot bats to leave Harvester Field with a 13-5 win to end the first round of district play with a 2-1 record and going to 11-10-1 overall for the season.
Senior Acton Smith got the start on the mound where he did a good job of scattering five runs on 10 hits in pitching the whole seven innings for the win.
Borger got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Hunter Hertel. However the Harvesters responded with a RBI double by James Thompson to make it a 1-1 game after one inning.
In the third inning, Hertel brought in his second RBI of the game on another single, but the Harvesters once again responded by scoring three in the bottom half of the inning that included a two RBI double by Collin Killgo, who would later leave the game with an arm injury, to put Pampa up 2-4.
Borger didn’t take too long to pull ahead with an error in right field that allowed Kody Davila to bring in two runs followed by Garrett Irwin hitting a two RBI double to give Borger the 6-4 lead.
With Killgo’s injury the Harvesters brought in Brent Green to pitch the final three innings where the Bulldogs had no problems connecting off the senior pitcher to add seven more runs in the game.
The whole Bulldog lineup did a solid job at the plate led by senior Brandon Garcia hitting his third homerun in two games to score three runs in the sixth inning along with junior Clay Ellis scoring three runs on a two RBI single and a solo homerun in the seventh inning.
Pampa added one run late on a RBI single by Cole Engle.
However, credit has to be given to Smith and the Bulldog defense for shutting down the Harvester bats the final four innings of the game.
With Borger’s win, the District 1-3A race became interesting as Borger, Pampa and Perryton each hold 2-1 district marks after the first round of play.
The Bulldogs will next start the second of three rounds of district play on Saturday when they travel to take on the Dalhart Golden Wolves in Dalhart starting at 2:00 p.m.
