Borger opens volleyball season in Canyon

August 15, 2012

Kaylee Purcell goes up for the kill in volleyball action Tuesday night against Bushland. The Borger volleyball lost to Canyon and Bushland in straight sets.

The Lady Bulldogs officially started their volleyball season Tuesday night in Canyon. They played two state ranked teams in Bushland and Canyon, and lost in straight sets 3-0, 3-0.

Borger took on Canyon first, who is ranked 4th in class 4A. The first set started out pretty even with Haley Armstrong providing two kills for the Lady Bulldogs and the match was even at 4-4. Even with strong defensive play, the Lady Eagles started to pull away. After kills from Nellie Embers and Kaylee Purcell, and an ace from Maggie McMurry, the Lady Bulldogs still trailed 19-11. Emma Wood, Katie Ammerman, Embers, and Purcell all added kills, while Wood also had a nice block at the net, but the ladies would drop the first game 25-16.

The second set was not so pretty. A kill from Armstrong and an ace from Embers started the game off in the right direction, and the ladies were only down 6-4. Despite many great digs by Maggie McMurry, the Lady Eagles went on an 8-1 run. Wood had another block at the net and Embers had a great kill, but the Eagles would win it 25-9.

The third set went a little better for the Lady Bulldogs. Wood and Embers had kills, and Maggie McMurry had a great dig to tie the game at 4. Ammerman added a kill, Nicole McMurry a dig, and Purcell a block to keep the game close at 9-6. Ammerman added another kill, and Wood and Armstrong had great blocks at the net to keep the Lady Bulldogs in the game. Ammerman added yet another kill and so did Purcell, but the ladies would lose this one 25-16.

The ladies did not have much time to rest before they had to take on state ranked Bushland. The set was close throughout and started off with an Armstrong block and a great kill from Embers. Wood would also add a block and an ace to make the score 8-5 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs. Ammerman would add a kill and Stephanie Soto, and M. McMurry would both make great saves. Armstrong, Wood, Embers, and M. McMurry all had great kills, and Tootie Karins made a couple of great defensive moves to keep the ball alive. The ladies kept it close but lost 25-20.

The second set against Bushland went quickly unfortunately. There were diving defensive plays from Blaine Hill, Soto, and M. McMurry, but the ladies fell behind 9-3. Armstrong and Embers had kills, but the Lady Falcons dominated 25-9.

Now we get to the third set which was highly entertaining. The ladies started strong again with great defense from Ammerman and M. McMurry. McMurry also added an ace and Ammerman and Armstrong added two kills to keep the game tight at 4-4. After that it was the Emma Wood show. She had a great block at the net and two kills in a row to make it 7-5, Lady Bulldogs. Ammerman added a kill and Purcell had a great block at the net, and the ladies were still up by 1. Wood went on another run having two more kills and a block at the net with Embers. After solid play from Armstrong and Ammerman and two errors on Bushland, the ladies were up 18-14, and very pumped up. Wood had another two kills and Purcell another block, and the ladies were close to victory at 21-16. With some sloppy play from the Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Falcons were able to crawl back in the game and tie it at 24. After a kill from Ammerman, it was tied at 25. An ace from N. McMurry tied it at 26. It was then tied at 27. After another kill from Wood, it was tied at 28. (Sensing a theme, here?) Ammerman added a kill and it was tied at 29, then at 30, then at 31. The game did eventually end, and the tired Lady Bulldogs lost 33-31 in the last game of the day.

Considering they were down in every game and came out and played so gutsy in the last game of the day the way they did says great things about these ladies. They play with such hustle and heart, and they will do great things this season. They will travel to Burkburnett for a tournament this weekend, and their first home game will be August 28.
