On Tuesday afternoon, the Borger Bulldogs took advantage of a great pitching performance by senior Hunter Hertel to open District 1-3A play with a 10-4 win over the Dalhart Golden Wolves on a cool afternoon at Huber Park.
Hertel dominated the Wolves’ bats, striking out 13 while giving up just two runs on five hits in six innings of work.
The Wolves cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning using three singles to bring in two runs to give Dalhart an 0-2 lead.
Borger responded in the bottom of the third as three Bulldog batters would be walked onto base, setting up Hertel to tie the game with a two RBI single. A passed ball at home plate allowed Garrett Irwin to come in from third to give Borger the one run lead before senior catcher Brandon Garcia hit a RBI single to make it a 4-2 score after three innings.
Over the next three innings, Hertel cruised on the mound by giving up just one hit while collecting five of his strikeouts during the span.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two RBI single by Max Lusk. This was followed with four more coming across the plate in the fifth inning that included a two RBI triple by senior rightfielder Zach McDonald.
Dalhart tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning by getting the bases loaded with no outs and scoring two runs. However, the Bulldog defense stepped up to hang on for the win with a double play at second and third base followed by Chayse Tracy closing out the game with a strikeout on the mound to give Borger the 10-4 win.
The Bulldogs improve to 10-9-1 overall on the season and start District 1-3A play 1-0.
The Bulldogs will next travel to Perryton on Saturday to take on the Rangers at 2:00 p.m. The Rangers lost their district opener with Pampa last night 3-1.
