That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. Borger can lay claim to being the home of a 2011 state championship team.
After cruising to wins on Monday in the first two rounds of the 3A State Tennis Tournament in Austin, the Borger brother and sister duo of senior Josh Madden and junior Abbie Madden left the courts at the World of Tennis at Lakeway in Austin as the best 3A Mixed-Doubles tennis team in the state.
They won the state championship match in straight sets over Laird Beaty and Courtney Johnson of Lindale, 6-4, 6-2.
In preparing for the state tournament, a little over a week ago, J. Madden made the statement that the goal of the team was to hopefully find a way to reach the finals match. The senior will now graduate knowing he and his sister accomplished that goal and surpassed it with the first place finish.
The Maddens cruised through the tournament bracket on Monday and Tuesday, needing just two sets in each of their three matches.
The Borger pair opened Monday afternoon taking on Dylon Cox and Kaitlyn Green of Kirbyville, winning 6-2, 6-3.
In the state semi-finals, the Maddens squared off with Eli Ramos and Erika Gilbert of La Feria, winning the first set winning 6-1 and hung on in set two for the 7-5 win.
Tuesday morning capped off a great 2010-11 season for the Maddens, who had racked up over 25 wins with just one loss.
The win marks the first state tennis title for the Borger High School Tennis program and is the first Texas Panhandle area state tennis champ since 2006.
