Borger hoop teams see mixed results in tournament play
Over the past couple of days, the Borger Bulldog and Lady Bulldog varsity basketball teams were busy taking part in tournament play in Lubbock and Breckenridge.Neither teams came home with tournament titles, but both were able to get into the win column and show improvement in various areas which will help both teams with district play starting in the next couple of weeks.After beating Sands on Wednesday, the Bulldogs finished the FiberMax Caprock Tournament in Lubbock with a 2-2 record with a win over Levelland and loses to Dimmitt and Tulia.In the Breckenridge Lions’ Club Christmas Tournament, the Lady Bulldogs opened play on Thursday losing to Albany, but were able to rebound that evening to get the win over Fort Worth County Day.After this week’s tournament play, the Bulldogs record goes to 7-10 while the Lady Bulldogs are 4-13.The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will ring in the new year with a trip to Spearman on Tuesday, January 3rd for a doubleheader. The girls tip off at 6:00 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.(boys) Dimmitt 65 Borger 54On Thursday morning, the Dimmitt Bobcats used a big first period to outscore the Bulldogs 18-7 on their way to a 65-54 win in the second round.The duo of Kelly Jackson and Matthew Johnson combined for 36 points for the Bobcats, while Jamon Hearon scored 16 to lead the Bulldogs. Grant Boren and Tyrell Haynes chipped in with seven points each for Borger.(boys) Borger 40 Levelland 39The Bulldogs and Levelland Lobos squared off in a defensive battle with neither team getting much of a separation from the other as Borger squeaked out the one point win over their former district foes.Hearon scored 22 points followed by Dillon Carrillo scoring eight.(boys) Tulia 75 Borger 49Through three periods, the Bulldogs and Tulia Hornets were tangled in a close battle with the Hornets holding just an one point lead going into the fourth period.But in the fourth period, the Hornets offense came alive to outscore Borger 33-8 in the final eight minutes to get the win and advance to the consolation championship game against Lamesa.Hearon led the Bulldogs with 13 points, followed by Haynes scoring 12.(girls) Albany 43 Borger 39The Lady Bulldogs held an early 8-5 lead after the first period. But the Lady Bulldogs could not overcome a good second period by Albany in the second half in their four point loss.Emma Wood had a big game scoring 22 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.(girls) Borger 39 Fort Worth County Day 37The Lady Bulldogs outscored County Day 33-15 in the second and third periods to build a good cushion for the win.Wood scored 15 points followed by Nellie Embers chipping in 13 points.
