Borger AD accepts job in Taylor

April 23, 2012

Rusty Purser

On Monday evening, Borger Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Rusty Purser accepted the AD/Head Football position for Taylor ISD.
Taylor is a 3A school with an enrollment around 880 students located in the Austin area. The Ducks football team went 3-8 in 2011, but were able to reach the playoffs where they lost to eventual state champions Wimberley 38-31 in the Bi-District round.
On Tuesday morning, Purser said one of the big appeals in the Taylor opening was the opportunity to be closer to family. Purser said, “We have several family members who live within 30 minutes of Taylor, so the opportunity to be be closer to our family was very appealing to my whole family.”
While the Ducks have seen limited success on the football field in recent years, Purser said the program has a great group of underclassmen coming up, which should allow the Ducks to continue to be in playoff contention.
Purser will also have some familiarity within the Taylor School District as he had worked with the school's superintendent in Floydada prior to coming to Borger.
Purser is finishing his third year with Borger ISD where he led the Bulldog football program to three District 1-3A titles, posting a 20-14 record that includes a 2-3 record in the playoffs.
Prior to Purser's arrival in 2009, the Bulldogs had failed to reach the playoffs three years in a row and posted a 2-8 record in 2008.
Purser takes a lot of pride in what the program accomplished under his leadership, saying, “I hope to be able to mirror the kind of success we had here at Taylor. Since I arrived in Borger, I have been amazed at the amount of support myself and the program has received from the community. Nearly everyone I have encountered has been willing to put in the work and effort in order to do what is best for the football team and the school.”
As for what is in store for the the AD/Head Football Coach positions for Borger ISD, Borger Superintendent Chance Welch said his goal is to have a new athletic director and head football coach in place before the end of the school year.
On Purser stepping down from his post at Borger, Welch said, “ Our athletic program experienced much success under Coach Purser's leadership. We appreciate the high expectations and commitment to excellence he instilled, and we wish Coach Purser well in his future endeavors.”
Purser said his last day as the Borger Athletic Director will be April 30th.
