After a season where he tore up opposing defenses on his way to earning District 1-3A MVP honors, Borger High School senior Shavoyiea Clement signed his letter of intent to play football for Wayland Baptist University on Friday morning.
An 3A All-State honorable mention in 2010, Clement played a big role in helping the Bulldogs claim the District 1-3A title and advancing to the regional playoff round by rushing for just over 1,800 yards.
What attracted Clement to Wayland is the size saying, “I didn’t want to go to a big school and when I went to visit Wayland I loved it.”
For Clement’s family the location couldn’t have been any better, in order to see Shavoyiea play. However Clement’s father Corrie Monroe made it known traveling to see his son play won’t be an issue anyways, saying, “We will be at more than a few of his games. We made the drive to Graham and Abilene this year so if he’s playing we’ll find a way to be there, wherever it is.”
This past season had the juke moves you expect from a good running back. However, what set the senior apart was being able to break tackles and carry defenders for the extra two or three yards when he needed them.
In making the transition from high school to colleigate football, Clement understands the atmosphere will be completely different and is ready to hit the weight room in order to get stronger.
Right now Clement plans to study business at WBU.
Wayland is in the process of restarting its football program under former Borger High School Head Football Coach Butch Henderson, who recently was announced as the new head football coach.
With a team that will be built with underclassmen, Clement said he is excited to have the opportunity to come in and compete for playing time right away.
Wayland Baptist will begin playing in the fall of 2012.
