On Thursday afternoon Borger High School senior soccer player Hannah Blakely signed a letter of intent to play colleigate soccer at West Texas A&M University in Canyon.
A four-year letterman for the Lady Bulldogs, the 2011 team captain has established herself the past couple of years as one of the best high school girl soccer players in West Texas.
On the reason why she picked West Texas A&M, Blakely commented, “I liked the environment and atmosphere of the team and the school. I’ve had the opportunity to work out with some of the players and they were real welcoming to where I know I can develop some good friendships within the team.”
Blakely went on to say that her mother and WT Lady Buff Head Coach Chad Webb have known each other for a couple of years through club soccer, so there is already some familiarity as to what the coach will expect and him knowing what Blakely can bring to the Lady Buff program.
Blakely expects to see action on the field from day one, saying she doesn’t expect to red-shirt for her freshman year.
Borger Lady Bulldog Head Soccer Coach Damion Simmons has high expectations for Blakely at the next level, saying, “If she continues to work hard then I know she has the ability to work herself into the starting lineup at some point. She has been a huge asset for us that will definitely be missed but I expect her to do well for West Texas A&M.”
Simmons went on to say that Blakely’s signing should serve as a good motivation for the younger players within the program on what they can potentially accomplish if they continue to work hard.
On the adjustment to the colleigate game, Blakely commented, “Right now I think the biggest adjustment will be learning how to balance my studying and work in the classroom with the amount of time I will need to devote to the team.”
As a four-year letterman on the Lady Bulldogs, Blakely has several great memories of being a part of the team that is highlighted by reaching the post-season all four years, saying, “Beating Canyon my freshman year to clinch the first ever playoff berth in the program was definitely awesome.
“Add that we have been able to make it back to the playoffs the next three years is something I am very proud of.”
While attending West Texas A&M, Blakely said she will study nursing with plans to becoming an registered nurse that works at a doctor’s office or hospital.
