PAMPA- On Monday evening, the West Texas Lady Comanches traveled to Pampa to take on the Booker Lady Kiowas in a Battle of the Tribes to determine which team would get to continue their season by claiming the District 6-1A number three seed and who would spend Tuesday checking in equipment and looking ahead to next year.
Both teams came out ready to play, with Kelsey McDonald for Booker and Danielle Heater for West Texas doing a solid job in the pitcherâs circle in the low scoring affair.
However, it would be the Lady Kiowas who would catch the breaks in the game to get the 5-3 win and end the Lady Comanchesâ 2011 season.
Heater started the game strong by striking out four Booker hitters in the first two innings, along with the Lady Comanche defense playing well, which kept the Lady Kiowas from getting past first base early on.
The Lady Comanches were able to get runners in scoring position on both the first and second innings on a single by Sarah Kelly and double by Erin Summers. Unfortunately, in both innings, Booker would be able to make the plays on the defensive end to keep the game at a 0-0 score.
In the top of the third inning, Bookerâs Shania Fronk collected the first of her two RBIs in the game by hitting a triple into centerfield.
Booker added two more runs in the fifth inning on a passed ball and sacrifice fly to take a 0-3 lead.
West Texas had its opportunity to have a big inning in the bottom of the third by loading the bases with only one out. However credit has to be given to Bookerâs play in the field to get a strikeout and a groundout to get off the field without giving up a run.
The Lady Comanches finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two RBI single by Hailee Flaharity to pull back to within one run, 2-3.
Heater helped her cause by bringing in a run in the sixth inning on a RBI single. However, it wouldnât be enough as Booker added one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to hang on to the lead and clinch the playoff berth.
The loss ends a nice streak of playoff appearances for the Lady Comanches. However, the future of the program looks bright as the team will only graduate one player from the squad, first baseman Erin Frost.
At the plate: Erin Summers 4/4 1 2B; Abby Rios 2/3; Hailee Flaharity 2/4 2 RBIâs.
On the mound: Danielle Heater 7 innings 8 hits 9 Kâs 4 BBâs 4 earned runs.
