BISD board plans to fill vacancy

November 15, 2011

The Borger ISD board of trustees accepted a resignation from a longtime board member and is setting procedures in place for a replacement.
During its regular meeting Thursday evening, the board voted to accept, with regret, the resignation of Johnny Rusten, who has served on the board since 1998, most recently as president. Rusten submitted his resignation citing work, family, and church priorities.
Robert Bradley, who was elected the new president of the board, said Rusten’s presence would be missed.
“He’s been a super fan, he’s been a super board member, and he is just a great person,” he said. “We will miss him.”
In addition to the election of Bradley as president, the board was also reorganized to elect Todd Harris as the vice-president, and to re-elect David Brandon as secretary.
After the election of officers, the board discussed options for filling the spot vacated by Rusten. Superintendent Chance Welch said the last time a position was vacated, the board sought out letters of interest and set a specific date. He said using this particular procedure was fine, but it would make the process of finding a new member stretch out over the course of three meetings.
“If we wanted to make a long term policy where we would accept letters of interest and then delegate to me the ability to set the date, it possibly could be a two-board meeting process,” he said.
He suggested the date be set for Friday, Dec. 2, in order to give people three weeks to submit letters of interest for the position.
As far as accepting the resignation, the board must act or the resignation is official within eight days. Welch said this would allow him and the board to act more quickly in filling the position.
Board member Les Sharp asked if the board will be able to see the list of names prior to selecting a member. Welch said it would certainly be possible.
BISD will be accepting letters of interest until Dec. 2 from individuals who are interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy on the Board of Trustees. Letters may be mailed to Superintendent Chance Welch, 200 East Ninth, Borger, TX 79007 or can be delivered to the administration building at 200 East Ninth. For further information, call 273-1000.
