Bill Strickland to speak at FPC

August 23, 2011

On Thursday, Frank Phillips College welcomes Mr. Bill Strickland, President and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, to campus to share his inspirational story in a special program at 11:00 a.m. in the Borger Community Activity Center gymnasium.
Strickland, author of FPC’s 2010-11 Common Reading “Make the Impossible Possible,” founded the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG) to bring arts education and mentorship to inner city youth in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Penn. when he was still in college.
In 1972, he assumed leadership of a struggling building trade school, Bidwell Training Center, creating Manchester Bidwell.
Today, the Manchester Bidwell Corporation has evolved into a national model for education, culture and hope. MCG Youth serves approximately 3,900 youth each year through classes and workshops in ceramics, photography, digital imaging and design art.
The Bidwell Training Center provides market-driven career education created through strong partnerships with leading local industries, offering accredited Associates degree and diploma programs in fields as varied as culinary arts, chemical laboratory technologies, health careers, horticulture, and office technology.
Since 1997, Manchester Bidwell has opened sites in Cincinnati, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and San Francisco, Cali.; all modeled on the Pittsburgh program.
Strickland is also a recipient of the McArthur ‘Genius’ Award, has guest-lectured at Harvard Business School, and served on the Board for the National Endowment for the Arts.
