Fad diets have been a part of American society since the 1800s. These alternatives to simple diet and exercise continue to grow.Beginning in the 1800s, the "banting" diet included low cards and high protein. Advertising has provided ideas on ways to stay thin from Lucky Strikes instead of a snack to the Cabbage Soup Diet. Weight Watchers began in the 1960s followed by the Adkins Diet and other popular diet plans. The 1990s was the beginning of the "low fat" craze.
