The Sanford-Fritch Eagles traveled 141 mies south Friday night, looking to secure first place in District 1-2A with a win over the Abernathy Antelopes.
The Lopes had a different plan and their quick and strong Abernathy team wore down the Eagles.
In the first quarter, Sanford-Fritch punted the ball and some great defense were able to force Abernathy to do nothing offensively and punt.
Sanford-Fritch worked the offense, relatively productive and quick, with junior running back Colton Valle running in for a 13 yd touchdown. The extra point failed and Sanford-Fritch was up their only time all game, 6-0.
This allowed a quick boost for an Abernathy payback by running and scoring from the ‘Lopes quarterback Austin Lewis.
The PAT was blocked by Tate Murray & Colton Valle to leave score 6-6.
The secnd quarter didn’t fair well for Sanford-Fritch quarterback Chris Bryan and his offense.
Two key interceptions by Victor Lewis in the Abernathy secondary would give enough time and ball placement for a field goal.
This let Abernathy get the lead at half time and they never looked back.
The third quarter still didn’t allow Snaford-Fritch to see much ball movement and at 7:02 Abernathy would score big following a great reception.
The extra point was blocked by Valle and Abernathy led 15-6.
The start of the fourth quarter with a run for a touchdown by the Antelopes would boost their lead 21-6.
Big catches by Tate Murray and Terry Bryan would put the Eagles in great scoring territory.
Eventually, despite several ‘no calls’, Valle would get his second touchdown run from four yds to make the score closer 21-13.
Time ran out for the Eagles with :46 left, the Lopes Lewis would run in once again for six points.
The game ended 28-13 in favor of Abernathy.
Defensive standouts were Calen Manzella, Daniel Segedy, Tyler Blankinship, Tate Murray, and Brady Robbins.
The Eagles matchup next Friday against Spearman for senior night and second place stand in district.
