Now is the time to adopt a new furry family member.
The Borger Animal Control constantly receives animals needing good homes. Animal Control Director Betsy Parks stated they are constantly receiving animals at the shelter. Last year, the shelter received 691 dogs and 409 cats. 44 percent of those animals are either sent back to their owners or adopted out, while the other percentage of animals are euthanized.
Adoptability is all determined on whether the shelter has space, the age of the animal, health, and whether the animal is aggressive.
Parks stated, “If the animal shows any sign of aggression, whether it’s towards food, people, or aggressive with other pets, the dog can’t be adopted out.”
If a pet owner loses a pet, Parks asks them to call at the first notice of disappearance. The Shelter will hold the animal for 72 hours.
If the pet is not claimed after that, it is determined whether they are adoptable or not. The first offense for a lost pet is $20, second is $25, third is $35, fourth is $45, and the fifth and up is $50 plus a $4 per day charge on top of that.
To adopt a pet, the charge is $40 for cats and $45 for dogs. All new pets must be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption or when they are six months of age. All adoptable pets interact with other dogs and cats along with the “dog walkers,” who are volunteers for the shelter. At this time, the shelter is needing donations for the animals such as blankets, towels, and more dog walkers. The shelter’s main goal is to “have a completely empty shelter.”
They also strive to educate the public about responsible pet ownership, local and state laws, and to simply have fun with their fuzzy friends.
Also everyone must remember the shelter takes in any kind of pets. “We try to put everyone with new families,” Parks says.
