9/11 memorial service to be held at Huber Park

September 7, 2011

With the tenth anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, quickly approaching, a memorial service to be held in Borger is in the works.
The service is being coordinated by the Borger Area Emergency Services Honor Guard with help from the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Borger Complex Honor Guard.
It will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011.
Bob Tiffany, who is a member of the Borger Area Emergency Services Honor Guard, said the service will be held at the site in Huber Park where the 9/11 memorial currently in the works will be constructed.
The site of the memorial will be north of the bird sanctuary and north of the Rotary Club flagpole.
He said there will be guests on hand to present music at the event, and two or three people will be speaking that day.
The keynote speaker will be Judge Bill Smith.
People are asked to bring their lawn chairs and blankets for the event. Tiffany said there will be a few chairs provided, but not many.
The World Trade Center steel from Ground Zero that will be used to build the monument will be at the service, up close and personal so citizens can see it firsthand.
Tiffany said more money is still being raised to bring in an engineer to do drawings for the memorial. Once this is completed, construction can begin.
On May 11, 2011, the steel arrived in Borger, escorted by emergency vehicles.
The procession started at Rice Construction and then went down Cedar to Zachry Construction, where the monument will be made.
The two pieces of steel for the memorial each measure 78” X 34” X 15” and each weighs 1,290 lbs., according to Tiffany.
Each beam representing the World Trade Center will sit on top of a rusted steel plate that will sit on top a five-sided base.
The complete event is told sequentially on the panels of the five-sided base that represents the Pentagon.
On top of the bottom piece will be green stone that represents the field where one of the airliners crashed in Pennsylvania.
The story of the 9/11 tragedy will be told in copy that is laser-cut into the stainless steel base platform.
The main platform is covered with black granite tile.
The pedestal, to be made out of gray unpolished granite, will rise on a five-sided convergent tile-covered column and be capped by a polished stainless steel platform.
The World Trade Center beams will rise from a Cor-ten steel pentagon set in the corner of a green granite pentagon.
Local dolomite will be used for the perimeter wall to establish local context for the monument.
There will also be local greenery surrounding it as well.
