PLAINVIEW-Solid pitching and an aggressive hit-and-run style at the plate proved to be a great formula for the Andrews Lady Mustangs in game one of the best-of-three 3A Area Round series with the Borger Lady Bulldogs on Friday evening in Plainview.
Lady Mustang pitcher Shannon Hobbs used a good combination of pitches to limit the Lady Bulldogs to two hits, while Andrews combined for 13 runs on 18 hits in the first two innings to set the tone for the 19-3 win for Andrews.
Andrews opened the bottom of the first inning with three singles and a bunt to quickly take a 0-2 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs finally were able to get off the field in the first inning, thanks to three pop outs. However, this was not before Andrews extended their lead to 0-5 on a three run home run over the left field fence.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to respond in the top of the second inning with Alex Lopez being hit by a pitch and Dakota Karins reaching base on a walk.
That would set up Lauren Hernandez to send the ball into center field for an RBI double to make it a 1-5 game.
Joanne Jones followed Hernandez and would connect for a two RBI double to bring in Karins and Hernandez pulling Borger back to within two runs, 3-5.
Unfortunately, the Lady Mustangs started to pull away in the bottom half of the second inning by scoring eight runs, followed by four in the third inning, to build a double-digit lead on their way to the win in five innings.
Andrews showed why it was able to go through District 4-3A play without a loss with its ability at the plate and Hobbs pitching. However, the Lady Bulldogs will try to make the adjustments need for the aggressive Andrews style in game two in order to send the series to three games and hopefully pull off the series win.
The series continued today in Plainview with game one getting underway starting at 1:00 p.m., followed by game three if necessary.
