“Big Latch On” to be held Saturday
The “Big Latch On” will be held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Huber Park Community Building. Local nursing mothers will gather to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and try to break the record for the most women breastfeeding at the same time.Groups of nursing mothers will come together at registered venues around the country (or the world) to nurse their babies at a set time. All the mamas and babies latched on for one minute at the set time will be counted by the witnesses. The numbers are added up and they will determine how close they come to the world record.”World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from August 1 through 7 in more than 120 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. It commemorates the Innocent Declaration made by WHO and UNICEF policy-makers in August 1990 to protect, promote and support breastfeeding,” according to the WHO website. People are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes early, so they can register attendants before the count. At each registered location, witnesses will count all the mamas and babies who are latched on for one minute at 10:30 a.m. This year’s registration location will be at Huber Park Community Building at 1208 S. Main. A brief discussion and door prizes will follow the event. For more information on the event or for donations, call Heather Hickman at 273-2094 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
