Going into the weekend, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen found themselves needing to win their four-game series with Clarendon College in order to clinch a spot in the Region V Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.
In the first two games of the series on Friday in Clarendon, the Lady Plainsmen got off to a great start by taking both games on the road, 7-4 and 9-3.
Saturday afternoon members of the community gathered at the horseshoe pits at Johnson Park to take part in the 12th Annual Borger Open Horseshoe Tournament sponsored by H&H Federal Credit Union.

The Borger Bulldogs entered Friday’s game against the Pampa Harvesters with one mission: Win the district title. After a strong third inning offensively and a solid outing by starting pitcher Hunter Hertel, mission accomplished as Borger won 7-2 Friday in Borger.
This was the fourth time the Bulldogs defeated the Harvesters. Head coach Steve Ribera said that’s tough for a team to do.
“These kids had a mission for sure to win a district championship,” Ribera said. “They came out and got it done.”
HEREFORD-Making their first playoff appearance in several years, there is no question that there had to be some concern to how nervous the Borger Lady Bulldogs were going to be as they opened the 3A playoffs against the Levelland Loboettes on Friday evening in Hereford.
Fortunately the Lady Bulldogs answered that question by playing a solid game offensively and defensively to leave the field with an 11-5 win and advance to the 3A Area round, where they will take on Andrews next weekend.
The West Texas High Comanches must have been a little ticked off after their loss to Boys Ranch earlier this week, because they put it to the Irish yesterday, 13-0 in five innings. Senior Logan Hoff led the attack with two home runs in the first inning and Big Ty Lay knocked one over in the third. The Tribe batted around in the bottom of the first, sending twelve hitters to the plate. Hoff is the lead off batter and had a full count when he sent his first one over the fence. In fact, the entire Tribe had a great day at the plate.
During an interview on Monday, John Green talked about some of the challenges junior colleges, like Frank Phillips College and Clarendon College, are facing from his perspective as an athletic director.
Green, who had spent the past 10 years as the athletic director for Frank Phillips College before taking the same position at Clarendon College last week, said there is no question that the budget cuts proposed in the Texas State Legislature have grabbed the attention of the community colleges across the state.
