From state gold medal to Texas Tech

Earlier this week, 2011 Borger High School graduate J’Cee Pool signed a letter-of-intent to compete in track for Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Prior to heading down to Austin to compete in the state track meet in early May, Pool was still uncertain about where she would have the opportunity to compete in the discus and/or the shot put at the colleigate level.
At the time, Pool said a couple of schools had talked to her, including West Texas A&M University, but none had officially made her an offer.

Bulldogs competing in Wayland Baptist 7 on 7 Tournament

On Friday, members of the Borger Bulldogs varsity and junior varsity football teams will take part in the first Wayland Baptist University-West Texas 7 on 7 Tournament.
The tournament will take place at Plainview’s Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium and the surrounding practice fields.
Thanks to more high school football teams using spread offenses, summer 7-on-7 Football has grown in Texas over the past couple of years, with teams from Borger participating in tournaments for the third year in a row.

FPC Softball adding four from the West Coast

Being a California native herself, it should come as no surprise that Frank Phillips College Head Softball Coach Jenneffer Kohler has been busy on the West Coast, where she has been able to add four new players to her club for the upcoming season.
Coming to Borger this fall will be pitcher Devin Dean, outfielder Brianna Rodriguez and infielders Madilyne Logan and Lucinda Ponce. All four are coming from the state of California.

Lady Plainsmen mixing freshmen size with sophomore guards

Entering his fourth year as head coach of the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen Basketball team, Eric Rodewald has been able to do a good job of retaining players from the prior year. This is a task that can be pretty difficult for most programs at the JUCO level that don’t have the resources to offer full scholarships for essentially every player on the bench.

Bulldogs earn Second Team All-State honors

After helping to lead the Borger Bulldogs to the District 1-3A title and to the third round of the 3A playoffs, 2011 senior catcher Brandon Garica and senior outfielder Garrett Irwin were named to the Second Team in the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writer's Association's 3A All-State Teams on Thursday.
Garcia, the District 1-3A MVP, had an impressive 2011 season posting a .511 batting average with 11 homeruns and a .944 slugging percentage.
Playing centerfield, Irwin made the team after posting a .434 batting average with 34 RBI’s, 45 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

Local students perform well in AAU National Tournament

Last week students from American Karate Studios in Guymon, Spearman, Gruver and Borger competed in the AAU Taekwondo National Championships in Austin consisting of thousands of athletes from across the country.
Four-year-old Issac Garcia of Borger won Silver in Fighting and the Bronze in Forms in his division.

Borger 11&12 year old Softball All-Stars win District

Over the past weekend, the Borger 11&12 year old Little League Girls Softball All-Star team won the district championship in a clean sweep, defeating Childress on Thursday 19-14 and Memphis on Saturday 20-12.
In Saturday’s Championship game, pitcher Makenzie May had 12 strikeouts in five innings of work with Maegan Stone closing the game by getting a runner out at home.
The team is coached by Steven Willis and Cindy Willis and advanced to Sectionals to be held in Lubbock.

Friends and former students invited to celebrate longtime Borger educator’s 80th Birthday

For those that grew up going to school here in Borger, there is a pretty good chance that in at least one of those years you were a student of Coach Bryan’s.
This Sunday, July 3rd, Frankie Gene Bryan will celebrate his 80th birthday.
To celebrate the milestone, former students and friends of Bryan’s in the community are invited to come out and help celebrate next Sunday, July 10th from 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. in the Garden Room of the First United Methodist Church.
The party is being hosted by Edith Stanley and Porter and Mary Jo Smith.

Borger looks good during 7-on-7 action in Amarillo

Earlier this month, members of the Borger Bulldog football team took part in 7-on-7 action at the Caprock Tournament in Amarillo.
The Borger team made a solid showing by posting a 2-1 record in pool play.
The Borger team’s only loss came against Caprock, 20-13, who went on to win the tournament.
A Borger team of junior high/8th graders also competed in a tournament at Caprock falling to Caprock and Palo Duro along with playing Dalhart to a tie.
