FPC Lady Plainsmen earn All-Conference honors

Two Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen softball players received All-Conference honors this week for their play during the 2012 season.
FPC freshman infielder Lucinda Ponce was named First Team All-Conference and All-Region after hitting .404 with 15 doubles and 10 home runs with 36 RBIs.
FPC sophomore outfielder Janelle Smith was named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Smith had a .354 batting average with eight doubles, and three home runs with 33 RBIs.

Plainsmen basketball team will have several familiar faces

One of the things that separates junior college athletics from what can be found at universities is the high amount of turnaround teams tend to see from one year to the next. In recent years, the high turnover trend was alive and well in the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen Men’s Basketball program where having just two or three players turning from the previous season seemed to be the norm.
However, the Plainsmen appear to be breaking the trend, as eight players have signed letter of intents to return to Frank Phillips College, including all five starters from the 2011-12 squad.

Sanford-Fritch’s Jameson signs with Clarendon College

On Monday morning, Sanford-Fritch High School senior Logan Jameson signed a letter of intent to join the Clarendon College Men’s Golf team.
Jameson had a good 2012 spring season which included qualifying for the 2A Region I Golf Tournament where he shot a 90-90-180.
Jameson joins a Bulldog golf team that qualified for this year’s NJCAA National Championships Golf Tournament in its’ first year of play.
The Bulldogs Men’s Golf team is under the direction of Clarendon College Athletic Director and Golf Coach John Green.

Borger AD and Head Football position drawing a lot of interest

Two weeks have passed since Rusty Purser made the official announcement he was stepping down as the Borger Athletic Director and Head Football Coach in order to take the same positions at Taylor ISD near Austin.
During that time, Borger ISD Superintendent Chance Welch said as of Thursday, May 3rd, the school district had received around 45 applicants expressing interest in the Borger AD and Head Football positions, with interviews tentatively to start taking place next week starting on Monday, May 14th.

WT’s Forrest finishes in 11th place at state golf tournament

On Friday, West Texas High junior Nathan Forrest took 11th place in the Class 1A Boys State Golf Tournament held at the Lion’s Golf Course in Austin.
Forrest shot a two day score of 81-84-165, finishing just five strokes from cracking the top ten.
Jackson Latimer of Martin’s Mill won the boys title shooting 72-74-146.

Frank Phillips College Plainsmen wrap up 2012 baseball season

On Saturday, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen baseball team wrapped up the 2012 season with a pair of losses to the #9 Howard College Red Hawks 11-1 and 10-0.
In game one on Saturday, Howard’s Clayton Crum had a good outing on the pitcher’s mound by getting the win and limiting the Plainsmen to two hits. At the plate, Howard scored at least one run in every inning.
Chance Harlen had a double for the Plainsmen, while Andrew Landin drove in the lone Plainsmen run.
Zach Johnson got the loss on the mound for the Plainsmen.

Errors costly for Comanches in Bi-District baseball loss

West Texas High was in a must win situation Friday afternoon in Canyon.
Facing Lockney for game two of a best of three series, the Comanches played a much better game than the first one, but they fell a little short, losing 10-8 and bowing out of the baseball postseason.
Errors still plagued the Tribe as they were charged with seven. The team played on turf, which could have caused some of the problems.
Jess Shields pitched 3 and 1/2 innings and had 3 strike outs, walked 1, and allowed 8 runs, just one was earned.

Late rally gives Lobos 5-3 win over the Bulldogs

LEVELLAND-On Friday evening, the Levelland Lobos scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead for the 5-3 win over the Borger Bulldogs in the 3A Bi-District Playoff Round.
The win on Friday allowed the Lobos to win the Bi-District series two games to none, after defeating the Bulldogs 16-5 on Thursday evening in Borger.
After seeing game one slip away in the sixth inning on Thursday, the Bulldogs came out focused and put together a better performance on Friday.

On Thursday evening, the Levelland Lobos took advantage of seven walks leading to 10 runs in the sixth inning, on their way to defeating the Borger Bulldogs 16-5 in game one of the 3A Bi-District Playoff best-of-three series.
Control issues plagued the Bulldog pitchers all evening as three pitchers combined to give up 12 walks and hit three batters through six innings of work.
Despite control issues and four errors, the Bulldogs were in position to get a late inning win by only trailing by one run, 5-6, after the fifth inning.

Lockney takes care of Comanches in game 1 of Bi-District playoff

West Texas High took on the Lockney Longhorns Thursday night at West Texas A&M in game one of the best two out of three series. Things did not go the way of the Comanches as they committed 5 errors, left eight base runners stranded, and their hitters struck out 11 times, in a 13-2 loss. Carlos Juarez was the losing pitcher for WT. Juarez is WT’s go to pitcher but he left the game in the middle of the third inning. Juarez allowed 10 runs, six of them unearned. He struck out three batters. Alex Ramirez pitched one and a half innings. He allowed three runs and struck out two.
