My first exposure to jazz was a tune by the fusion band Weather Report written by its leader and keyboardist, Josef Zawinul.
It was written to memorialize a nightclub named after Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, a saxophonist who played with Dizzy Gillespie some and, like Diz and other jazzmen of the late 40s and early 50s, was instrumental in the birth of Bebop, a style of jazz known for its insanely fast and intricate improvisations.

Okay, here it is, my review on the iPhone 5 now that I have had the chance to hold it in my hands. I have had my new phone for about a day now and I LOVE it.
The iPhone 5 lives up to its looks in the sense that it’s the best iPhone yet.
It’s also the biggest overhaul to the line since the release of the 3G about four years ago.
Compared to other smartphones, however, it’s more of a catch-up move.
The iPhone has a winning recipe already, and Apple’s upgrades are careful and thoughtful.

With the presidential election just a little over a month away now, the media coverage continues to pick up day after day.
It can be easy for Americans to get lost in the shuffle.
There is so much spouted on television about both candidates, and many are doing their best to sort through what is fact and what is fiction. Some people even give up trying to figure it out, believing whatever comes across the TV screen.
However, it is important that Americans have a political conscience.
We need to care about the races that affect our country the most.

I went for a drive around the county this morning—actually several counties, looping through Skellytown, White Deer, Panhandle and back across to 136 to the lake. You may recall that the purpose of these outings is birding and there were hundreds of waterfowl at the playa in Carson County and the south end of Meredith. They are generally a little far away for good photos, but I did get a few. There were also a few hawks around, Red-tailed and Swainson’s and Northern Harrier, but mostly I just drove.

In my column this week, I would like to draw your attention to a wonderful organization in our area that you may not be familiar with.
A young girl that I grew up with is the West Texas director of Western Wishes, a non-profit organization that makes dreams come true for children and young adults who face adversity in their lives and love the western way of life.
The organization has been going since 1994, and they have made hundreds of wishes a reality.
Jessi Schmidt of Morse has battled cystic fibrosis since she was a toddler.

There was a recent story about a Portales, NM woman who was arrested and handcuffed in front of her children for not returning a Twilight movie and DVD. She had racked up almost $36 in fines. I thought, surely this can’t be true! After one google search, I found the story all over the web. It was true! The charges were eventually dropped in this case, but there are many more stories all over this great nation of people being arrested and charged for not returning library materials.

I visit Lake Meredith almost daily. The water level is pretty low, but to be honest, that doesn’t bother me as much as it does a lot of folks.
I’ve never been much of a lake person; I’m not nearly coordinated enough to ski, never had the patience to fish, and can’t swim all that well.
My wife and I used to camp out there a little when we were first married, but we haven’t even done that in years.
For most of the thirty years that I’ve lived in Hutchinson County I’ve ignored the lake.
That changed about a year ago.

In case you weren’t aware, the 2012 Summer Olympics have been going on in London for several days now, and will continue for several to come.
The Olympics is something I look forward to every four years (or two, since the Winter Olympics are held two years after the Summer Olympics). It’s just fun to watch representatives from my homeland take the field in various events and not only excel, but take the medal stand time and time again.
