Hicks: Future of Frank Phillips is bright

Even in the midst of recent turmoil, the future of Frank Phillips College is still looking bright.
Dr. Jud Hicks, president of FPC, was the featured speaker for the Borger Rotary Club meeting Tuesday. He spoke candidly about some of the issues the college has faced in the past, as well as its future plans.
He said when the news broke on Jan. 19 about the possibility of FPC’s state funding being cut and the college facing potential closure, it was not a good day on campus.

Survivors need to register for RFL

The time for cancer survivors to get registered for the Relay For Life is quickly approaching!
The last chance for the cancer survivors or supporters residing in the Hutchinson County to register to take part in the Relay for Life and to get their invitation to the annual Survivor’s Dinner and receive their t-shirt is Friday, May 13.

Borger Mixed Doubles Team wins 3A State Title

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. Borger can lay claim to being the home of a 2011 state championship team.
After cruising to wins on Monday in the first two rounds of the 3A State Tennis Tournament in Austin, the Borger brother and sister duo of senior Josh Madden and junior Abbie Madden left the courts at the World of Tennis at Lakeway in Austin as the best 3A Mixed-Doubles tennis team in the state.
They won the state championship match in straight sets over Laird Beaty and Courtney Johnson of Lindale, 6-4, 6-2.

Mission Accomplished! Pool reaches goal of being a state qualifier

From kills at the net in volleyball to driving down the lane for an easy lay up in basketball, Borger senior J’Cee Pool has put together a stellar resume in athletics during her time in high school.
However, there was one goal she wanted to accomplish before she walked across the stage a graduation: qualify for the state track meet in the shot put.

Forrest finishes state tournament tied for sixth place

On Tuesday, West Texas High sophomore Nathan Forrest wrapped up play at the 1A State Golf Tournament in Austin finishing the tournament tied for sixth place with a score of 79-77-156.
Logan Philley of Robert Lee won the individual title shooting a 70-72-142.
In team competition, Robert Lee won the state title with a team score of 312-314-626.

Tuesday morning the Borger Mixed Doubles team of senior Josh Madden and junior Abbie Madden won the 3A State Title at the State Tennis Tournament in Austin.
The pair won the championship match in straight sets over Laird Beaty and Courtney Johnson of Lindale 6-4, 6-2.

9/11 monument steel set to arrive Wednesday

The steel for a 9/11 monument to be constructed in Borger is set to arrive Wednesday.
Locals are encouraged to line for the streets for the arrival of the steel taking place at 1 p.m., which is coming straight from Ground Zero of the World Trade Center via Pierce Trucking.
The procession will start at Rice Construction and will then go down Cedar to Zachry Construction, where the monument will be made for the 9/11 memorial in Huber Park. Locals are encouraged to line Cedar Street and show their support.
The project has been overseen by Elks Lodge #1581.

City of Stinnett preparing for annual cleanup

The City of Stinnett is preparing for its annual cleanup.
The cleanup was discussed at the city council meeting, held Monday evening at Stinnett City Hall.
The annual cleanup for Stinnett will be held June 6 thru June 18, 2011. This year’s cleanup will be different from past years. There will be disposal bins at the recycling center and designated areas to drop off your items.

Borger takes on Pecos in 3A Area Round this weekend in Lubbock

The 1-3A District champion Borger Bulldogs will take on the Pecos Eagles this Friday and Saturday in a best-of-three series in the 3A Area Round.
Pecos reached the Area Round this past weekend by winning two games on Saturday to win the Bi-district series over Seminole two games to one.
Game one of the Borger-Pecos series will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Lubbock Cooper High School.
Game two will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Lubbock Cooper, with game three to follow if necessary.

Forrest tied for seventh after first round of state tournament

At the 1A State Golf Tournament in Austin, West Texas High sophomore Nathan Forrest shot a 79 to find himself sitting tied for seventh place after the first round of play on Monday.
Logan Philly of Robert Lee sat on top of the leaderboard with a 70, followed by his teammate Haden Dillard in second place with a 73.
Forrest is tied with Garrett Betts of Quanah in seventh place.
The final round of the 1A State Golf Tournament took place today at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.
